From the WWE Rumor Mill: Backstage reaction to WarGames, update on its return date

WarGames was a huge hit backstage.

What's the story?

NXT continued the tradition this past week when the most recent Takeover, WarGames managed to satisfy the fans more than the Survivor Series PPV.

According to a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the officials backstage were quite pleased with how the show went and have pencilled in the return date for the historic show.

In case you didn't know...

The WarGames gimmick match was the brainchild of the late great Dusty Rhodes that made its debut for National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and then later for WCW. The revolutionary gimmick match consisted of a steel cage that covered two rings and included two or more teams.

The match made its return after 20 long years when Triple H and co. brought back the concept in as part of the Takeover series but not without giving it a WWE sping to it. The cage in WWE's version of the match was open from the top, unlike the enclosed original.

The recently concluded Takeover show was main evented by the WarGames match that saw three of the biggest factions in NXT battle it out in the gruelling encounter. The Undisputed Era consisting of Bobby Fish, Adam Cole and Kyle O'Reilly managed to win the historic bout by defeating the team of The Authors of Pain & Roderick Strong on one side and SAnitY on the other.

If you haven't watched the 36-minute classic, we highly advise you to do so.

The heart of the matter

The Observer notes that WWE is really happy with how the show panned out to be and are planning on making it a yearly Survivor Series tradition.

While the fans would have loved to see the concept applied to the main roster as the prospect of watching a star-studded WarGames match is just too alluring to pass on, the WWE seems content on having it exclusively for the developmental brand.

What's next?

The idea of continuing WarGames as a yearly series is a brilliant move on WWE's part. Expect the company to experiment with the rules even more in next year's edition if everything comes to fruition.

Author's take

Despite the criticism that came WWE's way for meddling with the structure and rules of the match, it lived up to its chaotic reputation and certainly warranted a comeback.

Hopefully, WWE has one for either SmackDown or Raw too in the near future.
