Opinion: What would the rumoured push for Big E mean for The New Day?
What the current rumours are
Fans of The New Day had better prepare themselves for some disappointing news. According to PW Insider, there are discussions being held around giving Big E a major push as a singles competitor.
Big E has been with the WWE since 2009 and looked to be very impressive during the early part of his career. He eventually found himself on the mid-card as the years went on. This would change once the WWE paired him up with Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods to form The New Day.
Big E has seen a lot of success and popularity with The New Day. The trio are one of the most loved tag teams on the WWE roster and there is never a dull moment when these three step into an arena. All three superstars who form The New Day have seen their careers take a positive turn but it seems that it will be Big E who will get that solo push.
The WWE revealed on Twitter that Big E is set to face Sheamus in the men's Money in the Bank qualifying match on next week's episode of Smackdown Live. It is highly anticipated that Big E will defeat Sheamus and go on to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match. This would be the start of his push as a singles competitor.
It has also been noted that this would be the ideal time for the WWE to break up The New Day. The immense popularity of the team is expected to contribute positively to Big E's run as a singles competitor and it has even been noted that The New Day could still continue with Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods. If this is the case, we are unlikely to see The New Day split up in the same way as The Shield did by having Rollins turn heel.
This would be a great way to facilitate the break up of the group. The three superstars have incredible chemistry together and nobody in the WWE Universe would want to see them going at each other.
Keeping Big E as a face would also allow him to reunite with the group whenever required and this can be a major draw for the WWE during special episodes of SmackDown Live as well as other major pay-per-view events.
What does this mean for The New Day?
How the WWE decide to break up The New Day remains to be seen. One thing which does seem pretty certain is that the lovable group will definitely be saying goodbye to Big E. It has still been pointed out that the group could still continue even without Big E being a part of it.
Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods are popular enough to carry the group forward and, if there are no plans to turn Big E heel, he could still team with the duo from time to time. It would also be refreshing to see how Kofi and Woods can keep the group alive and take their team forward without Big E.
It is unlikely that we will see the end of The New Day. The group is extremely popular and their merchandise sales are motivation enough for the WWE to keep the group going - even if it without Big E. What could happen is that another superstar gets added to the group in place of Big E.
This would be a great move by the WWE as it would prevent fans from feeling that the group has become somewhat depleted by Big E leaving, and it would also be a great way to get another superstar into the spotlight.
My take
The odds of The New Day breaking up completely is very unlikely. All the signs do point to Big E being pushed as a solo performer, but this does not mean that the tag team will no longer exist once he does leave.
What fans can expect to see is for Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods to continue to keep the group alive and potentially recruit a new member. Only time will tell what the WWE has in store.
