WWE RAW: Most improved Superstar for 9th September
This week’s show had everything. It had some memorable returns, memorable angles, good TV matches and to top it off, the ending made the WWE fans everywhere go “Yes!”, with Daniel Bryan finally fending off The Shield and getting back at Randy Orton.
The other big story of the night was the return of few superstars to the WWE. First, the local boy Edge kicked off the show with the Cutting Edge segment, and verbally bashed the COO of the WWE, Triple H.
Edge looked in his element this week, and didn’t miss a beat on the mic. The other superstar who returned was Santino Marella, and he picked up an upset victory over Antonio Cesaro. But the one person who made the most impact on his return was none other than the most bizarre superstar in the WWE history, Goldust.
Dustin Rhodes, the older brother of Cody Rhodes issued a challenge to Randy Orton last week, with the stipulation that if he could beat Orton, his younger brother Cody would be reinstated in the WWE. If he lost however, Cody would still be unemployed, and Orton accepted his challenge.
WWE hyped the return of the former superstar, and the Toronto fans gave Goldust a warm welcome, as Goldust looked to settle scores with Randy Orton. As the night played out, it turned out that Randy Orton might have undermined his opponent, as Goldust stood toe to toe with the WWE champion.
Goldust and Randy Orton put on a solid, near 15 minute match that saw Goldust getting the upper hand on many occasions. Goldust didn’t miss a beat in the ring, and his regular appearances in the independent scene helped him to shake off his ring rust.
Goldust almost pinned the WWE champion on many occasions; as a good measure of retribution, Goldust delivered the Cross Rhodes to Randy Orton and almost got the three count, but Orton somehow managed to get his shoulder up just in time to avoid the defeat.
In the end, Randy Orton somehow managed to connect with the RKO to pick up the victory, but not before Goldust gave him a scare. The fans rallied behind Goldust, and started a “You still got it” chant, which the superstar thoroughly deserved.
With Randy Orton pinning Goldust, Dustin’s chance to get his brother rehired went up in smoke, and a dejected Dustin made his way back to the locker room area as the crowd showed him their appreciation of putting on a solid match for them.
Goldust was greeted by Stephanie McMahon backstage, who taunted Dustin, saying he and his brother were losers, and that he disappointed everyone and let them down.
Will this be the last time we’ll see Dustin on WWE TV? I don’t think so. The McMahons and the Rhodes have never seen eye to eye, as Vince made a mockery out of Dusty Rhodes when “The American Dream” signed with the then WWF.
There were rumours that Vince McMahon didn’t like Dusty Rhodes, and Dusty too wasn’t pleased by how he was treated by the WWF management, as he was a legend during his run with the NWA. With Stephanie mentioning Dusty Rhodes during the segment, this can lead to a bigger program going forward.
There have been rumours about a McMahon-Rhodes feud sometime in the future, and if it is indeed true, then we can see Goldust back in the WWE. Although Goldust hasn’t performed in the WWE for a while, he stepped up his game and showed everyone that he could be a good performer if given the chance.
Although we’ve seen Goldust perform before in the WWE, this was the first time that we saw the serious side of Dustin, which worked in his favour. He was the most improved superstar this week, and although he’s a veteran in the business, he took his game up a notch and came up with a great performance.
