From the WWE Rumor Mill: Backstage reasoning as to why Jinder Mahal is getting a WWE Championship push
What’s the story?
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer reported the reason why Jinder Mahal is getting a main event title match at Backlash.
In case you didn’t know...
This is not the first time the company has put Jinder Mahal in a major situation. In 2012, Mahal was in the finals of a tournament to crown the first ever NXT Champion. Though NXT wasn’t as big as it is today, it was still a sign of the confidence they had in him.
The heart of the matter...
Continuing Meltzer’s point, if Jinder Mahal and Randy Orton headlined Backlash with the old $50 pay per view model, it would generate a terrible buy rate. With the WWE Network, the public is paying $9.99 and is more likely to give a new push such as Mahal’s a chance.
Wrestlezone.com also mentioned that some of the major reasons for Mahal’s push include the WWE’s expansion into India has a lot to do with the push, along with the opening of the WWE India Shop website.
What’s next?
Backlash is just a little over two weeks away. Look for Mahal and Orton to further their feud on Smackdown Live this Tuesday
Author’s take...
I’ll admit that I wasn’t a fan of Jinder winning the #1 contender’s match a few weeks ago, but I’m impressed with his performance since that win. I’d go as far as to say that I wouldn’t mind him to have a short title run.
Orton is a 13-time champion in the WWE and really doesn’t need the belt. I think it would be interesting to see what Jinder does if he gets the chance to hold the WWE Championship.
