What's the story?

There have been quite a few updates going around with regards to John Cena's WrestleMania status. We know that he's not been booked for a match, but the rumour mill is abuzz about him actually having a match at the show of shows.

In another update on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer spoke about the backstage news on Cena's match.

In case you didn't know...

John Cena was originally scheduled for a match against Lars Sullivan, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. However, Sullivan had reportedly faced a huge anxiety attack, and his debut was pulled and he was sent home.

As a result, his match against Cena was cancelled, and though Cena always appears for WrestleMania if he's not injured, it seems as though his busy Hollywood schedule would keep him away from the show of shows.

This hasn't stopped the rumour mill, however, as The Observer reports that Cena does, in fact, have a match at WrestleMania.

The heart of the matter

On the Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer said:

The Cena match is being kept a secret. I mean even people who know everything don’t know that one.

He indicated that while a few of the top officials internally are aware, most people who should know are being kept in the dark about it. There's a very high chance that only McMahon and Cena (and the opponent himself) are the ones who know about what's going on.

Until then, we're left to speculate. Previous rumours stated that Drew McIntyre was one of the back-up opponents for Cena, while later reports stated that he would face Samoa Joe for the United States title.

The latter, however, didn't come to fruition as Rey Mysterio announced that he would be challenging Joe for the title at The Show of Shows.

What's next?

WrestleMania is just a week away, and we're going to have to wait for the grandest stage of them all to know what WWE has planned for John Cena.
