WWE Rumors: Chris Jericho could drop the United States title on SmackDown Live
What’s the story?
Chris Jericho could drop the United States Championship soon as his band Fozzy is slated to perform on the same night as Backlash.
In case you didn’t know...
Jericho won the United States title from Kevin Owens at Payback. Thanks to the win, Jericho will now move to the SmackDown roster. Earlier, AJ Styles became the number one contender for the United States title and has been scheduled to get his title shot at Backlash.
The heart of the matter
The updated Backlash schedule from WWE has listed Chris Jericho as the United States champion. According to this, Jericho will defend his newly-regained title against AJ Styles at Backlash which takes place in Chicago. However, Fozzy is set to perform on the same night in Morgantown.
This means that Jericho might drop the US title soon so that there isn’t a conflict of schedule. Fozzy’s tour starts on Wednesday and goes on until May 28th, with dates being added in June as well and this makes it harder for Jericho to be an active champion.
What’s next?
Kevin Owens is likely to get his rematch for the title soon. Owens winning back the title from Jericho could be the most logical move here. WWE probably just wanted Jericho on SmackDown and now since it’s done, dropping the title might not hurt anyone.
Author’s take
As mentioned earlier, Jericho being on SmackDown itself is a big deal. He doesn’t need to have a title around his waist to remain relevant. The Fozzy tour means that Jericho’s TV time would be toned down a bit. But once he wraps up the tour and returns, Jericho could become a major attraction on SmackDown.
