What's the story?

Cody Rhodes and the rest of the Elite are slated to become the hottest free agents once 2018 ends. Rhodes mentioned last week that he recently turned down an offer from WWE.

According to Ringsidenews.com, WWE insider Brad Shepard reports that this wasn't the case.

In case you missed it...

Cody Rhodes and the rest of the Elite have been some of the biggest non-WWE wrestling stars for the last few years. All of the Elite are slated to become free agents once 2019 hits.

There have been signs that they might be attempting to start their own promotion, All Elite Wrestling, after reports surfaced last month regarding several trademarks being filed. Rhodes was also recently photographed in a box at a recent Jaguars' game.

He also mentioned last week that he had already received a big money offer from WWE, but he turned it down, but Shepard's sources have told him a different story.

The heart of the matter

Cody is in high demand, but maybe not as high in demand as previously stated. Brad Shepard mentioned something to the contrary of Cody's previous revelation on his Oh You Didn't Know podcast:

"So there was a recent tweet by Cody Rhodes or an indication that he received a WWE offer within the past few weeks The initial report from Dave Meltzer said essentially that WWE was going to offer top main event money to Cody Rhodes to try and get him signed.”
“So I was told that Cody was hyping himself regarding the WWE offer and Meltzer is either doing him a favor by boosting it or is being given bad information. Nobody is offering Rhodes millions of dollars.”

The report from Ringsidenews.com also mentions that Rhodes would likely not have actually turned down millions of dollars had WWE offered it to him.

What's next?

Whatever happened, someone is throwing smoke. Either Cody is indeed trying to puff up his profile to net a potential deal from WWE or he was offered a normal contract and simply declined it.

If he is trying to sign with another promotion, it might be a negotiating ploy by Rhodes. He's also friends with Dave Meltzer, as are two of his closest confidantes in the Young Bucks.

Meltzer might have been trying to help boost Rhodes' status, but the real truth is only known by WWE and Rhodes. The next month and a half will certainly be interesting.
