WWE Rumors: Dean Ambrose vs. The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship set to happen at Payback
What’s the story?
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that Dean Ambrose will defend his Intercontinental Championship against The Miz at Payback.
In case you didn’t know...
Since the Brand Split was revived, The Miz’s work with the Intercontinental Championship has been heavily praised. After his fantastic promo on Talking Smack and his feud with Dolph Ziggler, fans began getting behind The Miz and recognising what he had to offer.
The Miz lost the Intercontinental Championship to Ambrose back in January on SmackDown which followed up a series of promos and segments involving The Miz, Maryse, Ambrose, and Renee Young.
During the Superstar Shake-up, their feud resumed when Ambrose attacked The Miz two weeks ago. Then, on the latest episode of Raw, The Miz and Ambrose cut promos on each other; possibly hinting at a match down the line.
The heart of the matter
If the Intercontinental Championship match between Ambrose and The Miz is confirmed next week, then the official card for Payback will have eight matches in total. As of now, the following are the only matches confirmed for the pay-per-view:
Kevin Owens (c) vs. Chris Jericho – United States Championship (If Jericho wins, he comes to SmackDown)
The Hardy Boyz (c) vs. Cesaro & Sheamus – Raw Tag Team Championships
Bayley (c) vs. Alexa Bliss – Raw Women’s Championship
Neville (c) vs. Austin Aries – Cruiserweight Championship
Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt – House of Horrors Match
Seth Rollins vs. Samoa Joe
Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman
What’s next?
The Payback pay-per-view is scheduled for April 30, 2017, so next week will be the WWE’s last chance to make any significant matches for the show.
Author’s take
Ambrose fighting The Miz over the Intercontinental Championship seems like a great match to help build up the Intercontinental Championship. Both men have history with the title and their history with each other only adds to the story being told.
As far as a winner goes, The Miz should probably win the title to mark his 7th Intercontinental Championship reign.
While Ambrose is a great character and a good wrestler, his latest run with the Intercontinental Championship has been less than stellar, to say the least. The Miz has demonstrated how great he can be with the title and although some fans want him to pursue a world title, the Universal Championship scene already has enough people lined up to take on Brock Lesnar for it.
With Kalisto, Chris Jericho, Apollo Crews, and Finn Bálor all on Raw, The Miz will have some fresher opponents for the Intercontinental Championship. Plus, there’s more money to be made in a Shield Reunion or feud than it will be for Ambrose to work in the midcard.
