WWE Rumors: Historic championship match in the works for NXT
After taking over the mainstream wrestling industry, the WWE appears to have set its sights on the indy scene. Its developmental league, NXT, which is closer to a house show than the WWE, is raising the bar for itself.
The next NXT Takeover special will host a rematch for the NXT Championship between former champion Finn Balor and his successor Samoa Joe. Scheduled for June 8th and available on the WWE Network, one of the biggest rematches in NXT history will go down at the special.
Samoa Joe will defend his NXT Championship against Finn Balor in the first steel cage match in NXT history, according to dailywrestlingnews.com. It has been reported previously that a stipulation was planned for the match and an unprecedented one like this certainly befits the veteran submission specialist defending his crown against the longest reigning champion in NXT history.
Former champs Neville and Bo Dallas faced each other in a ladder match in 2014 and so did Balor and Kevin Owens in 2015. If the house show in Lowell where the title changed hands was anything to go by, this will be incendiary.
The were reports that the NXT Championship was supposed to change hands at the Takeover special in Dallas during WrestleMania weekend, but was postponed.
