WWE WrestleMania 33 Rumors: Intercontinental Championship bout to be the first match on the main card

Who will be the Intercontinental Champion when the dust has settled?

What’s the story?

PWMania reports that the Intercontinental Championship match between Dean Ambrose and Baron Corbin is expected to be the first match on the main card of WrestleMania 33. This means WrestleMania 33 could follow the trend of the past two WrestleMania with the Intercontinental Championship match starting the show.

In case you didn’t know....

Ambrose and Corbin have been feuding since the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view when Ambrose pinned Corbin to eliminate him from the WWE Championship match. Corbin attacked Ambrose after the match and followed it up on the following SmackDown episode.

In the 10-Man #1 Contender’s Battle Royal, Corbin was eliminated by Ambrose again which lead to a follow-up attack from Corbin. The feud was taken to another level when Corbin attacked Ambrose with a pipe, attacked him with a forklift, and announced that he was challenging Ambrose for the Intercontinental title.

The heart of the matter

This will be the first singles match contested for the Intercontinental Championship on the main card of WrestleMania since WrestleMania 28 when Big Show defeated Cody Rhodes. The championship was also defended at WrestleMania 29 in a match between Wade Barrett and The Miz, but that match took place on the WrestleMania pre-show.

What’s next?

Corbin is the rumored victor for this match and his potential win next week on Sunday would mark his first championship in the WWE. Corbin winning the title will also mark the 11th time the championship has changed hands at WrestleMania.

However, if Ambrose retains, he will join Rob Van Dam, Chris Jericho, The Rock, and the late Macho Man Randy Savage as one of few men to successfully defend the Intercontinental Championship without a disqualification or a count out.

Tune into WrestleMania 33 on Sunday, April 2, 2017, at 7 P.M. EST/4 P.M. PST to see the fate of the Intercontinental Championship.

Author’s take

The match between Ambrose and Corbin could be a great way to start WrestleMania and give the fans an exciting match to start the official show. The match won’t be a technical showcase, but it could still surprise a lot of fans with its hard-hitting brutality.

This match could be more interesting if it’s made a Parking Lot Brawl or Falls Count Anywhere match; allowing both men to showcase how tough they are and what they’re willing to do for the Intercontinental Championship. As of now, it’s just a regular singles match, but that could change on the go-home SmackDown episode.
