WWE Rumors: Potential plans for The Undertaker at Royal Rumble

The Undertaker and AJ Styles shared the ring for the first time ever on Smackdown Live 900

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that there are serious talks of The Undertaker wrestling WWE World Champion AJ Styles in the near future. Meltzer said that the most likely time for this would be at the Royal Rumble 2017, as WWE wants The Undertaker to be involved in a big way at the event.

The Phenom challenging for the WWE World Championship after seven years would definitely help to sell tickets at the Alamodome, where they are hoping to sell over 60,000 tickets. Here’s what Meltzer said:

"There has been legit talk of doing A.J. Styles vs. Undertaker at Royal Rumble. We haven’t heard that it’s a done deal, but it is something talked about. If Undertaker was to win, they could have Cena go for No. 16 against Undertaker at Mania, since Cena vs. Undertaker is a match never done before at Mania. There may be a timing issue since Undertaker had recent hip surgery and is going through rehab right now."

The John Cena vs. Undertaker match has been discussed for a long time now. They were originally supposed to face off at Wrestlemania 32 this year, in what would presumably have been The Deadman’s final match. There has also been a discussion of a Wrestlemania main event, which will see Cena crowned as the 16-time world champion.

With The Undertaker as the World Champion, facing John Cena helps to hit several birds with one stone. They can have a retirement match for The Undertaker, make John Cena win his 16th World Championship, and they can finally do The Undertaker vs. John Cena match, something that they have wanted to do for a very long time.

Taker vs. Cena is one of the major big scale Wrestlemania matches that has never happened. If it is to happen, it is practically guaranteed to be the main event of Wrestlemania, regardless of whether there is a title or not. It will be a big money match on the grandest stage of them all.

When The Undertaker returned on SmackDown Live 900, he warned the team that if they did not defeat Raw, there would be severe consequences. Now that SmackDown Live won, it will be interesting to see how they get him involved in any feuds.

The rumour right now is that The Undertaker will appear again sometime after TLC. All signs seem to be leading to the fact that he will, in fact, perform at the Alamodome. The Phenom’s presence will be important in drawing people to the stadium.

One big special attraction, who is confirmed for the Rumble is Goldberg. Pro Wrestling Sheet reported that Brock Lesnar is also going to be in the Royal Rumble match, or at least he is pencilled in to be there at this moment.
