WWE Rumors: The Undertaker may not face John Cena at WrestleMania 33
The Undertaker announced his return on Smackdown Live’s 900th episode. There has been heavy speculation that The Phenom will be involved in a major way at the Royal Rumble. There are also reports which state that this run of The Undertaker will indeed be his last.
According to Wrestlingnewsworld.com, The Undertaker’s return to the company is set to end in a retirement angle at Wrestlemania 33. The report also stated that while Undertaker vs. John Cena was the initial plan, Vince McMahon has told the writers to brainstorm other ideas for The Undertaker, that does not involve John Cena.
The Undertaker is under a contract that requires him to work only one date a year. While it is unlikely that he will wrestle again this year, there have been heavy rumours that he will be facing The Phenomenal AJ Styles for the WWE World Championship at the Royal Rumble.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that there are also plans being discussed for an AJ Styles vs. The Undertaker match at Wrestlemania 33. However, from the looks of it, Taker vs. Cena seems to still be the plans pencilled in.
The match between the two icons was supposed to take place this year at Wrestlemania 32. However, after Cena was injured with a torn rotator cuff, Shane McMahon was put in as a replacement instead, with a stipulation that if Shane won, he would take control of Raw, and if Taker lost, Wrestlemania 32 would be his last.
However, Taker won, and Shane got control of Raw for the next 3 and a half months anyway, rendering the match’s stipulation pointless.
