WWE Rumors: WWE teases John Cena vs. Velveteen Dream WrestleMania match
What's the story?
Ringsidenews.com ran a story from WWE.com where WWE asked which of five potential dream matches for John Cena at WrestleMania the fans would like to see.
Among the names were Brock Lesnar, Rey Mysterio, Drew McIntyre, Braun Strowman and the most exciting one, the Velveteen Dream.
In case you didn't know...
John Cena has returned for a short run in WWE over the last month. He will be departing soon to start filming another movie.
To 'write Cena off of television', plans were originally in place for Lars Sullivan to make his main-roster debut by attacking Cena at some point. The attack would be the start of a potential WrestleMania storyline for Sullivan and Cena.
Since Sullivan has had anxiety issues lately, his spot with Cena might be in jeopardy. The poll came out on WWE.com today, and Velveteen Dream was the only NXT superstar on the list. Cena has encountered practically all of the other choices in one form or fashion.
The heart of the matter
The Velveteen Dream has not been booked for a match at NXT Takeover: Phoenix. Since he appears to be left out of the NXT loop, Ringsidenews.com's report mentioned that it has confused most fans and pundits alike.
It could be a sign of a Royal Rumble debut or that he might debut on the main roster shortly after the rumble event.
Dream's matches with the likes of Aleister Black, Tomasso Ciampa and Ricochet have stolen the NXT Takeover shows. He also had a strong showing in the ladder match that determined the first-ever NXT North American Champion.
The report mentions that he might still have a little heat on his shoulders after telling the WWE Universe to spam the WWE's social media accounts so that he would get a main roster call-up. That might be a possible reason for not having a match at NXT Takeover: Phoenix.
It also questioned if the addition of Dream to the list of established main roster superstars was a calculated move or not.
What's next?
In my humble opinion, I would love to not only see Dream on the main roster but also oppose one of the biggest stars ever at WrestleMania 35.
I have to think adding him to that list was a calculated move and perhaps a gauging of the WWE Universe regarding how popular the Velveteen Dream really is.
Cena seems to be in part-time mode from now on, and if he still wants to help WWE out, putting over someone like Dream would do wonders for the company.
It might also just be a fun poll to fill content on the website, but with WWE, you never know the whole story. The next few weeks should clear a lot of things up regarding WrestleMania.
