WWE Rumours: WWE reportedly cancels huge interpromotional title match due to AEW's involvement
What's the story?
Upon her recent return to Japanese puroresu promotion World Wonder Ring Stardom, WWE UK Women's Champion, Toni Storm was slated to go one-on-one against Bea Priestley in a highly awaited match-up.
However, that singles match has now been cancelled as per WWE's orders.
In case you didn't know...
Prior to signing with the WWE in 2018, Toni Storm worked for Stardom where she initially won the SWA World Championship before eventually signing with the promotion in 2016. Later the very same year, Storm won the World of Stardom Championship from Mayu Iwatani in a match where the latter was legitimately injured, resulting in a stoppage.
In 2018, Storm lost her title to Kagetsu and eventually made her way over to the WWE to start competing under the NXT UK brand.
The heart of the matter
Current WWE UK Women's Champion, Toni Storm was all set to go one-on-one against the newly crowned World of Stardom Champion, Bea Priestley in a highly awaited singles clash at the upcoming 16th of May Stardom show at the Korakuen Hall.
However, due to a last-minute change, that match has now reportedly been nixed. Stardom took to Twitter to announce that the bout will not take place due to circumstances beyond the promotion's control.
The cancellation of the match has immediately led to speculation that it is WWE who reportedly didn't want the match to occur, given the fact that Priestley is contracted to All Elite Wrestling and the company wouldn't want Storm to suffer a loss to someone from a rival promotion.
Later on, Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer (courtesy of Whatculture.com) confirmed the story, stating that WWE didn't want their UK Women's Champion to lose to the World of Stardom Champion, with Priestly seemingly expected to win.
What's next?
The scheduled match between Toni Storm and Bea Priestley was going to take place on the 16th of May, but that match has now been cancelled, and Priestley instead will defend her title against Hazuki.
Storm, on the other hand, will face Kagetsu instead.
