WWE: Sting and The Undertaker - When two icons collide

A couple of years ago, the professional wrestling industry and WWE Universe in general was abuzz about the possibility of a superstar coming to the WWE to face The Undertaker at WrestleMania. The Undertaker has been the marquee name at WrestleMania for years; The Undertaker’s streak is the most impressive thing in sports entertainment, and WrestleMania has become synonymous with The Undertaker’s streak!

Every year, WWE selects a top-notch competitor to do justice to Taker’s legacy; and after facing some of the greatest names in the business, it looks as if WWE is finally out of names to pit against the Deadman at WrestleMania.

However, there is one man who wrestling fans want to see against The Undertaker at WrestleMania. For more than a decade, he was seen as the perfect opponent for Taker, as both the characters have a different aura and an unparalleled legacy to their names. This certain individual came close to signing with the WWE a couple of years ago, but it didn’t work out. Rumours have started this year that the WWE is interested in signing him up once again. He is none other than “The Icon”, Sting!

Before we understand the importance of the Stinger facing The Undertaker, we need to understand why this match is considered to be the dream match of professional wrestling.

The idea started way back during the Attitude Era, when The Undertaker was seen as the flag bearer of the WWF, while no one else meant more to WCW than the Stinger. The Undertaker was the corner stone of the WWF, someone who was loyal to the company, and was the most respected performer, while Stinger was the same in WCW.

When their personas became somewhat identical after Sting donned the ‘Crow’ gimmick, the fans wanted to see the match of the century between two of the most respected veterans in the business; and after a decade and a half, it is still the biggest dream of a wrestling fan to see a bout between The Undertaker and Sting.

Stinger refused to sign with the WWE after WCW folded, as he did not want to be ‘just another WCW guy’ in WWE. With Vince making a mockery out of WCW with the Invasion angle, Sting was one of the very few individuals to have not signed with the WWE. To this day, Sting is considered to be the biggest name in the history of professional wrestling who hasn’t signed with the global juggernaut.

With Sting reaching the final stages of his career, there is little time left for professional wrestling fans to see the match they always dreamed of; and with WWE running out of ‘big time’ names for The Undertaker, it was seen as an inevitable move for Sting to sign with WWE at least for one match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania. When those talks crumbled in 2011, WWE promptly replaced Sting with Triple H, and the rest was history.

The next year’s edition of WrestleMania is rumoured to be the final WrestleMania for The Undertaker, and hence WWE will pull out all the stops in signing the Stinger for at least one match. If everything else fails, WWE has a back–up plan in Brock Lesnar; but with The Undertaker being the last active legend along with Sting, WWE owes it to the fans to give them the dream match that they have been clamouring for nearly two decades!

With still months to go before the annual extravaganza starts, rumours have started up about WWE and Sting’s interest to work the match at WrestleMania. Only time will tell us if we will witness this match, and we can only hope that Stinger and WWE come to terms to give the fans one last spectacle before they bring down the curtains to the careers of two of the greatest legends this business has ever witnessed.
