WWE News: Chad Gable trains with Olympic hero
What's the story?
If you follow Twitter, you'll have spotted some documentary-style videos from Chad Gable. His most recent one features him training with amateur wrestler and Olympic gold medallist Dan Gable.
If not, you can watch the clip below.
In case you didn't know…
Chad Gable, real name Charles Betts, is a well-respected amateur wrestler in his own right, even progressing to the Olympics himself. He competed in 2012, defeating Keitani Graham from the Federated States of Micronesia in the qualification round.
When choosing his ring name, Betts opted for the name "Gable" as a nod to Olympic gold medalist Dan Gable. Dan himself is a retired amateur wrestler, famed for going his entire Iowa State University collegiate career without a loss until his very last match where Larry Owings defeated him.
He also won a gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games - not giving up a single point and October 25, 2013 was recognized as Dan Gable Day in Iowa.
The heart of the matter
Chad Gable has been incredibly popular with the fans since his NXT days where he was teamed with Jason Jordan as part of American Alpha. The pair went on to win the NXT Tag Team Championships and the SmackDown Tag Team Championships not long after debuting on the blue brand.
However, Chad's career since has been a bit stop start. When Kurt Angle revealed that he had a son who was a wrestler as part of a storyline on Raw, many believed Gable was the man who was going to move to the red brand and get a huge push as a singles competitor - mainly due to them both having the connection of being Olympians and very successful amateur wrestlers.
It was instead Gable's partner - Jason Jordan - who was revealed as Angle's son, and while Gable had a short run of singles matches on SmackDown Live, including impressive showings against AJ Styles among others, Chad has now been paired with Shelton Benjamin and the pair have been among a pack of contenders for The Usos' titles.
Gable has more recently taken to social media to post biopic-style videos of his training - including one more recently with none other than Dan Gable.
What's next?
Well, we don't think this is the last we've seen of these videos, and Chad Gable seems to be building his own momentum on Twitter. Gable and Benjamin recently earned a shot at the Tag Team Championships after winning a number one contender match to open this week's SmackDown Live, however the pair are part of a stacked roster featuring The Usos, The New Day, Bludgeon Brothers, Rusev Day and Breezango, so if they don't get the titles this time round, it could be a long wait until the next shot.
Author's take
There's absolutely no doubting Gable's ability, and it's always cool to see stuff like this surface online. Behind the scenes videos are always cool and even more so when it's someone held in such high regard appearing in them.
There are plenty of teams on SmackDown right now, but it would be great to see Gable get pushed - either with Benjamin or as a singles star - tp get his hands on some gold again, as it'd definitely be deserved.
Gable has been using the hashtag "scratch and claw" and in the video Dan says that is how he managed to defeat many of his opponents over his career. There's a good chance this could become a new motto for Chad to utilise, with potential WWE merchandise to feature soon as a direct benefit of this. So far, Chad's only solo merchandise has been his "Ready, willing and Gable" towel, so it would also be nice to see him get a mini push outside the ring too.
