WWE WrestleMania 33 News: Chris Jericho confirms upcoming departure from WWE after WrestleMania 33
What's the story?
During a recent interview promoting Wrestlemania with Forbes, Chris Jericho says he will be leaving WWE shortly after the grandest stage of them all. He's the current United States Champion but is expected to lose the title to Kevin Owens at WrestleMania.
There is no word on if or when Jericho will return to the WWE, but it could be a while before we see Y2J back in a WWE ring.
In case you didn't know...
Originally, Chris Jericho's current run with WWE was only meant to last until WrestleMania 32. He was brought back specifically to work with AJ Styles through the event in Dallas, but his run was extended by an entire year. The interesting thing is the past year of Jericho's career is regarded as one of the best.
The heart of the matter
During the interview, Chris Jericho had the following to say about his upcoming departure from WWE:
“We’re getting ready to put out a new Fozzy record, and I can’t do wrestling and music at the same time. So I think this [wrestling] run is pretty much winding down at this point. It’s time to take a break from wrestling and work on some of these other things that have been on the back burner and are starting to come to fruition.”
What's next?
Chris Jericho will defend the United States Championship against Kevin Owens at Wrestlemania. That may be the end of his run, but he could stick around for one more PPV. For the summer, Y2J will be touring with Fozzy.
As usual, Jericho will be keeping himself busy in and out of the ring. However, he confirmed he would be back inside a WWE ring again soon, so this is by no means "The end of Jericho."
Author's take
Honestly, Chris Jericho has been such a pivotal part of WWE television over the past year that it's going to be interesting to see how WWE officials fill his spot. We knew Jericho was leaving sooner rather than later, but he extended his run for an entire year longer than it was meant to be.
We will miss him while he's gone, but Fozzy is also a really fun band. It may not fit everyone's taste, but seeing Chris Jericho perform in any fashion is entertaining. Thankfully, this departure from the ring isn’t permanent.
