Who was behind the controversial angle on RAW?, WWE issues statement, Ric Flair speaks out
- There is a very fine line between being entertaining and being offensive, and the controversial angle between Paige and Charlotte on RAW this week tipped on the former side as it ended up going a little tad overboard.
The WWE was subjected to a barrage of negative criticism for letting Paige insult Charlotte’s late brother Reid Flair. Although the segment achieved success at grabbing the attention the WWe Universe, it did so at the expense of garnering a lot of cheap heat.
WWE issued a statement addressing the controversy that erupted after the angle on RAW. Below is the statement WWE issued to F4Wonline.com:
“Subject matter this personal is only approved as a result of the strong advocacy of the talent themselves. Notwithstanding that, WWE is ultimately responsible for what airs in its programming.”
The statement points out to Charlotte being the one responsible for the angle. Reports suggested that WWE had indeed taken the bit of Charlotte's late brother out of the script, but Charlotte pushed the Creative to include the angle and went ahead with it on RAW. At the end of the day, the feud is much more personal and has gotten an added dimension to it.
- Paige’s insults to Charlotte’s late brother Reid Flair came as a surprise to Charlotte’s mother and also to the legendary Ric Flair, who said he was oblivious that such an angle was being planned.
On his podcast, Flair mentioned that WWE did not inform him prior to the segment and he was indeed left teary eyed when he witnessed the angle on RAW.
He chose not to go on the offensive, as he felt it would hurt Charlotte’s position in the company and also stated that being the premature stage of her career, she could not have refused to go ahead with the angle.
The Nature Boy was of the opinion that, even though the angle achieved the purpose of adding intensity to the storyline, he would have chosen to keep it out of the scripts. Even from a fan perspective, Flair wasn’t too amused with the segment.
He concluded on a positive note by saying that, the controversial angle will be forgotten after Paige and Charlotte put on a solid match at Survivor Series this Sunday and that he holds no bad feelings towards WWE.
