Allen Iverson’s Early life
Allen Ezil Iverson was born in Hampton, Virginia. His mother was 15 when Iverson was born. Ann Iverson gave her maiden name after his father, Allen Broughton, left her.
He attended Bethel High School and played football. He played multiple positions on the team before turning to Basketball during his school days. Excelling in both games, Iverson led both teams to Virginia state championships. He was the Associate Press High School Player of the Year award for football and Basketball.
Later Iverson played for the Georgetown team and won the Big East Rookie award in 1995. In his second and final season at Georgetown in 1996, Iverson led the team to a Big East championship. They lost in the NCAA tournament finals, but Iverson’s defensive game handed him the Big East Defensive Player of the Year award.
Allen Iverson’s NBA Journey
After a very positive recruitment rating, Allen Iverson was declared for the NBA draft in 1996. He was selected as the first overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers. Making his early impact in the league, Iverson won the NBA Rookie of the year averaging 23.5 points per game. Iverson remained a focal point of Philadelphia’s offense. Allen Iverson won four scoring titles in 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2005.
Nicknamed “The Answer”, Iverson was one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history. Iverson won the regular season MVP award in 2001, leading the team to the NBA Finals, but lost to Los Angeles Lakers.
After the departure of 76ers’ coach Larry Brown – Iverson’s production took a huge hit. He moved to the Denver Nuggets team, joining hands with another scoring champion Carmelo Anthony. But the collaboration didn’t fructify as expected, and after 2 season’s stay, Iverson moved to the Pistons.
After a season’s stay with the Detroit team and later with the Memphis Grizzlies, Iverson returned to Philadelphia as his last NBA team.
Iverson finished his career with the Besiktas team in Turkey. After retirement in 2011, Iverson even played for 3’s company in the inaugural season of BIG 3.
