Bam Adebayo: A Brief Biography

Born on July 18, 1997, Edrice Femi “Bam” Adebayo is an American professional basketball player. Bam Adebayo started his professional NBA career after being selected as the 14th overall pick by the Miami Heat in the 2017 NBA draft. He has played as a centre guard for the same team (Miami Heat) since the year of the draft.

Throughout his basketball career, he received many honours, including the NBA All-Star and NBA All-Defensive Second Team. Bam guided his team (Miami Heat) to the NBA Finals and earned a gold medal in the 2020 U.S. Olympics in Tokyo.

Bam Adebayo’s Early Life

Bam Adebayo was born in Newark, New Jersey, on July 18, 1977, to his Nigerian Yoruba father, John Adebayo, and his African-American mother, Marilyn Blount. Bam Adebayo was nicknamed “Bam” at a young age by his mother when he flipped over a table while watching an American animated sitcom, The Flintstones. Bam copied the style of the show’s character, Bamm-Bamm Rubble. So, his mother gave him the nickname “Bam”.

Bam’s family moved to North Carolina when he was seven years old. He completed his education at different schools in North Carolina. Bam has a strong bond with his mother, who played a vital role in shaping his life. She always supported him in all the ups and downs.

Bam Adebayo’s Education

Bam Adebayo enrolled at the Northside Carolina High School in Pinetown, North Carolina. He played basketball with his school’s basketball team and averaged 32.2 points and 21 rebounds per game as a junior. During the summer, Bam Adebayo and the 2016 five-star recruit Dennis Smith Jr. joined the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team. Bam averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per game on the Adidas Uprising Circuit.

Bam was transferred to High Point Christian Academy in High Point, North Carolina, for his senior season. He played his first season match against New Garden Friends School, grabbing 22 points and 17 rebounds. Bam decided to join the University of Kentucky on November 17, 2015. He participated in the 2016 McDonald’s All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic in January 2016.

On December 7, 2016, Bam made his college debut, scoring 16 points and 7 rebounds in a match against the Valparaiso Beacons men’s basketball team. On March 17, he entered the 2017 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament and defeated Northern Kentucky Norse men’s basketball team in the tournament's first round.

In the second round, Kentucky recorded a victory over the Wichita State. Bam lost the match to North Carolina in the Elite Eight on March 26. After this match, Bam Adebayo declared for the 2017 NBA draft on April 5. During his college career, he was regarded as Second-Team All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman team.

Bam Adebayo’s NBA Journey

Miami Heat

On June 22, 2017, Bam Adebayo was drafted as the 14th overall pick by the Miami Heat in the 2017 NBA draft. He officially joined the Miami Heat team on the first day of July by signing his first rookie scale contract. Bam recorded a career-high 21 rebounds on November 25, 2018, in a match against the Toronto Raptors. He averaged 8.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in 82 games.

During the 2019-20 season, Bam grabbed his first career triple-double in a victory over the Atlanta Hawks on December 10, 2019. A few days later, he was regarded as the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the games from December 9 to 15. Bam got a chance to play in the NBA All-Star Game on January 30. He tallied a playoff career-high 32 points in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. At the end of the 2019-20 season, Bam was awarded the NBA All-Defensive Second Team award.

On November 28, 2020, Bam extended his contract with the Miami Heat by signing a five-year contract extension. On January 23, he played his first match of the season against the Brooklyn Nets, scoring his career-high 41 points. Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Buttler became the first pair in league history to record triple-doubles in the same game multiple times.

In December 2021, Bam Adebayo had surgery on his right thumb and was sidelined for 4 to 6 weeks. Bam led the team in a win over the Boston Celtics in Game 3 of the Boston Celtics on May 21, 2022. At the end of the season, he was selected to the All-Defensive Second Team for the third consecutive season.

On February 2, 2023, Bam was selected to play his second NBA All-Star Game and tallied his season-high 38 points on February 8. He recorded his first career playoff triple-double in Game 5 against the Milwaukee Bucks.
