Dennis Rodman: A Brief Biography
The former professional American basketball player Dennis Keith Rodman played at the small/power forward position in the NBA. He was born on May 13, 1961, in Trenton, New Jersey. Dennis was famous for his astonishing defensive and rebounding abilities. He played for several teams in the National Basketball Association, starting with the Detroit Pistons, Rodman played for the San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers, and Dallas Mavericks. The 5-time NBA champion also represented some teams in the then newly-formed American Basketball Association, Mexican League and British League.
Dennis Rodman entered the NBA league in 1986 after finishing his high school and college basketball career. He also worked in films and followed his hobby of professional wrestling from 1997 to 2008. Dennis won the Celebrity Championship Wrestling tournament in 2008.
Throughout his career, Dennis earned several awards and recognition, including the NBA All-Defensive First Team, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the NBA All-Star (2-time), and the All-NBA Third Team (2-time), and NBA 75th Anniversary Team.
Dennis Rodman Early Life
Dennis Rodman was born in Trenton, New Jersey but raised in Dallas. His father, Philander Rodman, worked for the Air Force and fought in the Vietnam War. Eventually, Philander left his family to settle in the Philippines. This incident shifted the family’s whole burden on his mother’s (Shirley Rodman) shoulders. She took care of Dennis and her two daughters, Debra and Kim. She worked on several odd jobs to meet family expenses.

Dennis Rodman made it to the NBA in 1986 as the 3rd pick in the 2nd round by the Detroit Pistons in the 1986 NBA draft. With 52 wins in the 1986-87 season, the Pistons entered the 1987 playoffs comfortably.
Rodman improved his performance and stats, averaging 11.6 points and 8.7 rebounds in the 1987-88 season. The Detroit Pistons entered the 1988 NBA Finals but lost the most important phase of the tournament. However, the Pistons again made their way to the 1988-89 Finals and defeated the Lakers this time. It was the first NBA championship for Dennis Rodman.
Dennis proved himself as the starting small forward for his team in the 1989-90 season. The Pistons took over the Chicago Bulls in the 1990 playoffs and beat the Portland Trail Blazers in the Finals to claim its second NBA title. In the 1991-92 season, Dennis displayed spectacular improvement in his rebounding and collected 18.7 rebounds each game.
In October 1993, the Pistons traded him to the Spurs. He played for the Spurs in the 1993-94 season as a power forward and acquired his third straight rebounding title. Dennis moved to the Chicago Bulls before the 1995-96 season. He averaged 5.5 points and 14.9 rebounds each game to win another rebounding title.
Rodman posted 7.5 points and 13.7 rebounds per game in the 1996 NBA playoffs. This season, he grabbed another NBA championship. Dennis won his 6th rebounding title consecutively in the 1996-97 season. The Chicago Bulls entered the 1997 NBA Finals and won against the Utah Jazz.
In the 1997-98 regular season, Dennis secured his 7th rebounding title in a row with 15.0 boards each game. This season, the Bulls reached the Finals to play against the Utah Jazz again. It was the fifth NBA championship for Dennis. Thereafter, Rodman joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 1999. He participated in 23 games only to average 2 points and 11 rebounds per game.
Dennis Rodman was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in the 1999-2000 season. His experience with the Mavericks wasn’t that pleasant. He played 12 matches and received six technical fouls and served a one-game suspension. After his retirement from the NBA league, Rodman took a long break from basketball to concentrate on his acting and wrestling career.
From 2004 onwards, Dennis also played for other teams in different leagues. He played for the Long Beach Jam (American Basketball Association), Fuerza Regia (Mexico), Orange County Crush (ABA), Tijuana Dragons (ABA), and Brighten Bears (British Basketball League).

Dennis Rodman attended South Oak Cliff High School, a public secondary school in Dallas. During his schooling, he came across the future basketball coach Gary Blair in the gym. Blair coached Dennis’s sisters in basketball to win three state championships. Later, Rodman moved ahead to join a public community college in Gainesville, North Central Texas College. But he stayed there only for a short stint and transferred to Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He played three (1983-1986) seasons there, averaging 25.7 points and 15.7 rebounds per game.
