Dennis Smith Jr.: A Brief Biography

Dennis Smith Jr. is an American professional basketball player who is a member of the Dallas Mavericks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Smith attended all four years of his high school basketball career for the Trinity Christian School in Fayetteville, North Carolina. As a freshman, Smith came off-bench and averaged 9.2 points and 3 assists per game for the season.

As a sophomore, Smith averaged 17.6 points per game and 9.3 assists, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.4 steals per game and helped the team win the 2014 NCISAA 1-A State Championship as Trinity Christian defeated Greenfield by one point. He scored 21 points in the final and was named the MVP. In his junior year, Smith averaged 22.2 points per game, 7.1 assists, 5.1 rebounds per game, and 3 steals and was named the Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year for North Carolina.

Smith decided to enroll at North Carolina State University. He recorded 2 triple doubles in the season making him the only player in ACC history to achieve this feat. He also scored a career-high 32 points along with 6 assists to lead NC State to its first win at Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1995 in an 84-82 victory against the Duke Blue Devils. Playing only one year in college, Smith averaged 18.1 points, 6.2 assists, and 1.9 steals per game earning him the ACC Rookie of the Year honors.

Smith was drafted as the 9th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks. Playing the event in Las Vegas, Smith averaged 17.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 2.2 steals per game in under 25.9 minutes of action in under 6 games he played. Smith scored a double-double in his debut in a 117-111 loss against the Atlanta Hawks. Later into the season, he scored his first triple-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a 128–120 win over the New Orleans Pelicans making him the third youngest player to have a triple-double, the other two being Lonzo Ball and LeBron James. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team at the conclusion of his rookie season.
