An American professional basketball player, Derrick Martell Rose was born on October 4, 1998. He is a player for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association. During his college career, he played basketball for the Memphis Tigers. He was rewarded as the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2009. In 2011, he was awarded the NBA Most Valuable Player at just the age of 22. Rose faced many struggles in his basketball career and played many matches against various teams including the Philadelphia 76ers. He suffered from many critical knee injuries during the 2010-11 MVP season and these injuries affected his performance.

Derrick Rose was born on October 4, 1998, in Chicago. He is the youngest son among his siblings, Dwayne, Reggie, and Allan. His siblings were professional basketball players and they helped him a lot in achieving success in his basketball career. His brothers taught him about the ins and outs of the basketball court. They inspired him to boost his basketball skills. In the 2008 NBA draft, he was selected as the first overall pick due to his talent and dedication.

Derrick Rose Education

The professional basketball player, Derrick Martell Rose was admitted to the Simeon Career Academy in 2003. He played basketball as a freshman for the Wolverines. Rose participated in many college championships and scored well. Rose was ranked as the fifth-best prospect in the country by Sports Illustrated. Rose was chosen to play in the Jordan Brand All-Star Game and was rewarded as the third greatest high school point guard by the ESPN RISE magazine in 2009.

Rose joined the University of Memphis Tigers. Indiana University and the University of Illinois tried a lot to sign Rose. Rose continued his college career along with basketball. He focused a lot on his education along with sports. Throughout his college career, he earned many honors including the All-American Third Team Honors. Rose played many matches against distinct teams such as the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and the Kansas Jayhawks.

NBA Journey

Chicago Bulls

In the 2008 draft, the Chicago Bulls selected him as the first overall pick. He led the National Team to play in the Olympics in Beijing. He missed the game for 3 months due to tendinitis in his right knee. He returned to the court in October and played all eight preseason games. After LeBron James, he was the first player to win the Rookie of the Year award. He scored 16.8 points, 6.3 assists, and 3.9 rebounds in each game.

In a game against the Boston Celtics, he recorded 36 points and was the second player after Chris Paul who scored 35 points in his playoff debut.

First All-Star Selection

Rose suffered from an ankle injury in his first preseason game and continued his sophomore season with it. He played his first match against the San Antonio Spurs but was unable to play properly due to an ankle injury. As his ankle healed, his game improved rapidly and he scored very well in the next matches. He became the first player since Michael Jordan in 1998, that be selected for All-Star Game.

MVP Season

Derrick Rose started his MVP season with his full potential and scored very well. He won various matches against distinct teams including the Detroit Pistons, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Los Angeles Lakers. He was rewarded as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player. Rose became the third player since the 1972-73 NBA season to record 2,000 points and 600 assists in a single season.

ACL tear

A five-year contract was signed by Derrick Rose with the Bulls worth $94.8 million in December 2011. During his second consecutive year, he just played 39 games as he suffered from many injuries. These injuries affected his productivity.

His left knee was injured during Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs over the Philadelphia 76ers. It was later revealed by an MRI that Rose’s Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) was injured. Surgery was performed for this injury and he had to miss the rest of the playoffs. The surgery was performed on May 12, 2012, with bed rest for 8-12 months.

Year Absence

After having the surgery on May 12, 2012, Rose returned to the court in January 2013 but did not play for the 2012-13 NBA season. His team continued to the Eastern Conference Semifinals and lost the match over the Miami Heat.

Return and Torn Meniscus

After being cured, Rose finally returned to the court on October 5, 2013, in a game over the Indiana Pacers. He played the game for a short duration as he returned to the basketball court after a long time.

He played his first official game on October 29 against the Miami Heat but unfortunately, he lost the game with a 107-95 score. After this, he continued his basketball journey ad played various matches against many teams including the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia 76ers. Rose again suffered from an injury in his right knee and the MRI confirmed that he has torn his right knee meniscus. Surgery was performed for curing this on November 25. On the same day, he was suspended by the Bulls.

Back to the Playoffs

Derick Rose came back to the basketball court on October 29, 2014. He played his first match against the New York Knicks, scoring 13 points. He again suffered from another knee injury just a month later after playing a match against the Washington Wizards.

He again had to leave the game as he again had a medial meniscus tear of the right knee, that needed surgery which was undergone on February 27. He returned to action on April 8 and played various matches including the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Final Season with the Bulls

Rose began the 2015-16 season by scoring a 104-98 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on November 5, 2015. After playing this match, he lost many matches against the Detroit Pistons and the Denver Nuggets. His last match with the Denver Nuggets is the season-best game in which he recorded 30 points.

New York Knicks

Derrick Rose signed with the New York Knicks along with Justin Holiday on June 22, 2016. He played various matches against distinct teams including the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Washington Wizards, Oklahoma City Thunder, New Orleans Pelicans, and the Boston Celtics. He faced many ups and down during this season.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The American professional basketball player, Derrick Rose was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers on July 25, 2017. He played his first match of the season against the Boston Celtics and scored a 102-99 win. Rose contacted the Cavaliers’ medical staff to recover from a sprained left ankle and bone spurs. He missed more than two months due to this injury.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Rose was traded to the Utah Jazz on February 8, 2018, and just worked with them for two days. After two days, he was waived by them. He signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves on March 8, 2018, and 14.2 points per game, they lost 4-1 to the Houston Rockets in the first round. He re-signed with the Timberwolves on July 4, 2018.

He played many matches for the Timberwolves. In a match on January 5 against the Philadelphia 76ers, he reached 10,000 career points. He gave the Timberwolves a 116-114 victory over the Phoenix Suns on January 20. He was waived from the Timberwolves on March 21 due to a right elbow injury.

Detroit Pistons

Derrick Rose was recruited by the Detroit Pistons on July 7, 2019. He made his first 119-110 win of the season in a match against the Indiana Pacers. He became the first player in the Pistons' history to score seven consecutive 20+ points. He had to leave the game as he suffered from a groin injury during a match with the Denver Nuggets.

Return to New York

On February 8, 2021, Rose re-signed with the New York Knicks for the 2021 second-round draft. In a game against the Atlanta Hawks on May 28, Rose recorded a season-high 30 points along with 6 rebounds and 5 assists but despite this, he lost the match.

Rose’s contract was extended on August 18, 2021, by the Knicks for three years worth a $43 million deal. Rose suffered from a skin infection on his ankle on February 25, 2022. Due to this, he was waived immediately.
