Gary Harris: A Brief Biography

Gary Harris is an American professional basketball player who plays for the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Harris played his high school basketball for the Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, Indiana. In his sophomore year, he averaged 14 points, 4 rebounds, two assists and three steals per game and helped Hamilton end the season with 17-4 record.

In his junior year in 2010–11, Harris averaged 18.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.7 steals per game and led the Royals to Class 4A regional championship, capturing just the second sectional championship in school history. In his senior year, Harris averaged 25.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 4.0 steals per game helping the team reach the Class 4A sectional final.

Harris played his college basketball for Michigan State University. As a freshman, he averaged 12.9 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.2 steals in 29.7 minutes per game and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He also earned second-team All-Big Ten selection and a Big Ten All-Freshman Team honoree. As a sophomore, he averaged 16.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.8 steals in 32.3 minutes per game and was named All-Big Ten, All-Big Ten Defensive Team, USBWA All-District selection, first-team NABC All-District, and an honorable mention Associated Press All-American honors.

Harris was drafted as the 19th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls and was later traded to the Denver Nuggets on draft night. After missing the first seven games of his rookie season due to a back injury, Harris returned to make his NBA debut against the Indiana Pacers. Harris signed a four-year, $84 million contract extension with the Nuggets just before the start of the 2017-18 season. He scored a career-high 36 points as the Nuggets defeated the Boston Celtics 214-118. In 2018, he would go onto tie his career-high in a win over Phoenix Suns.
