Jonathan Malangu Kuminga was born in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The youngster had basketball following family, and that certainly helped him to incline towards the game. Kuminga began playing basketball in the Democratic Republic of the Congo at age two. Later in 2016, Kuminga moved to the U.S. to play high school basketball.
The five-star rated recruit played for Huntington Prep School in Huntington, West Virginia as a freshman and then moved to Our Savior New American School in Centereach, New York, in his sophomore season. Making a massive contribution to the team's success, Kuminga averaged 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists per game in his sophomore year.
After the season, Kuminga went on to play older and bigger opponents in Nike Elite Youth Basketball League. Playing for NY Rens, Jonathan Kuminga averaged 20.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.
