Jusuf Nurkic: A Brief Biography
Jusuf Nurkić is a Bosnian professional basketball player who plays a center for the Portland Trail Blazers of the NBA. He was born in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina. His nickname is "Bosnian Beast".
Jusuf started his basketball career by playing for youth side of Slovenian club Zlatorog. In 2012 he signed for Croatian team Cedevita. He was named MVP at the FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship Division B in 2012 and at the FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship Division Bin 2014. Also in 2014, he was nominated for the FIBA Europe Young Player of the Year Award.
Nurkić was drafted by the Chicago Bulls with the 16th in the 2014 NBA draft. On the same night, he along with Gary Harris were traded to the Denver Nuggets for Doug McDermott and Anthony Randolph. On 29 October 2014, he made his NBA debut against the Detroit Pistons. On 20 May 2014, he underwent a successful surgery to repair a partially torn left patellar tendon, which made him miss first two months of 2015-16 NBA season.
On 13 February 2017, Nurkić and a 2017 first round draft pick, were traded to the Portland Trail Blazers for Mason Plumlee, a 2018 second round pick and cash considerations. He made his debut for Portland against the Utah Jazz. On 2 March 2017, he recorded 18 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 blocks in a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Five days later, he scored 28 points, 20 rebounds, 8 assists, and 6 blocks in a win over the Philadelphia 76ers. He missed the final seven games of regular season and first 2 playoffs games during the 2016-17 season due to a non-displaced fracture in his right leg. On 6 July 2018, Nurkić re-signed with the Portland Trail Blazers.
