Klay Thompson: A Brief Biography
Klay Thompson is an American basketball player who plays for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA season as of October 2024. Thompson was a member of the Golden Warriors squad when they won four-time NBA championships. Thompson has also been a five-time NBA all-star and a two-time All-NBA third-team honoree and was named to the rookie first team in 2012 and defensive second team in 2019. After playing 13 years of his career with the Golden State Warriors, Thompson was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in a six-team trade on July 6, 2024.
Early Life
Thompson was born in Los Angeles on February 8, 1990, His father was selected as the first pick in the 1978 NBA draft, and his mother played college volleyball for the University of Portland and the University of San Francisco. When Thompson was two years old, his family relocated to Lake Oswego, Oregon. There, he met fellow future NBA player Kevin Love and played Little League with him as friends and teammates. Thompson's family relocated to Ladera Ranch, California, when he was 14 years old. And in 2008 he graduated from Santa Margarita School in Rancho Santa Margarita.
He was selected for the Orange County third team and the All-Area second team during his junior season. Thompson led SMCHS to a 30-5 record and a spot in the Division III State Championship as a senior while averaging 21 points per contest. Thompson made a state finals record-breaking seven 3-pointers in a single game during the state championship. He received numerous honors, including League MVP, first-team Best in the West, Division III State Player of the Year, and EA Sports Second Team All-American.
NBA Journey
Klay Thompson was chosen by the Golden State Warriors as the 11th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. After starting guard Monta Ellis moved to the Bucks just before the 2012 trade deadline, Klay quickly established himself as a starter. He had a solid season's end, earning him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
Over the following few seasons, Klay improved as a shooter and defender to rank among the best in the league. He was first named to both an All-NBA Team and an NBA All-Star Team during the 2014–2015 NBA season. He and Steph Curry established a strong backcourt chemistry that ultimately helped the Warriors win their first title in more than 40 years. In the 2015 NBA Finals, they defeated Lebron's Cavaliers, with Klay averaging 15.8 points per game while providing outstanding defense.
He continued to make it to the finals five years in a row and four more times, adding two more rings to his collection along the way, shattering NBA records and winning numerous individual awards. Unfortunately, he injured his ACL during game 6 of the 2019 NBA finals against the Toronto Raptors. As he was recovering from his previous injury he damaged his Achilles tendon just before the 2020-2021 season. Therefore he was forced to sit out for another 1.5 years due to ACL and Achilles problems.
But, after taking proper grueling physical therapy sessions, the rehab sessions he was back on the court in the 2021-22 season. Thompson started on the court again in January 2022 and helped the team to reach another playoff and then to the finals in the 2021-22 season. Thompson passed LeBron James in the three-point shooting for second on the NBA playoff's all-time three-pointers list. Thompson was again exceptional in the 2022-23 season when he became the only NBA player in history to record multiple games with 12 or more three-pointers in the season. Also, he joined James Harden and Stephen Curry to make it at least 300 three-pointers in a season. In the 2023-24 season, Thompson averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.

Thompson went to the Santa Margarita School in Rancho Santa Margarita. During his junior year, he was chosen for the All-Area Second Team and the Third Team for Orange County. Thompson averaged 21 points per game as a senior, helping SMCHS to a 30-5 record and a position in the Division III State Championship. During the state championship, Thompson shot a state final record-breaking seven 3-pointers in a single game.
Later, Thompson attended Washington State University for his college career and was the lead scorer for his team especially when it comes to 3-pointer percentage. And score an average of 12.5 points per game. During his sophomore season, Thompson averaged 19.6 points per game for the whole season. And was named All-Pac-10's First Team. After his junior year, Thompson declared for the 2011 NBA Draft.
