Tim Duncan

Timothy Theodore Duncan is a former American basketball player and coach. He was born on April 25, 1976 in Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands. One of the greatest NBA players of all time was also nicknamed ‘Timmy’ and ‘the Big Fundamental’. He was considered one of the greatest power forwards and played for the only NBA team San Antonio Spurs. His career spanned 19 years (1997-2016). Later, he joined the same team as an assistant coach from 2019 to 2020.

The 5-time NBA champion was also a 3-time NBA Finals MVP, 15-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player. After playing high school and college basketball, Tim entered the NBA league in 1997 when the Spurs chose him in the 1997 NBA draft. Tim Duncan is the only player to be selected in the All-Defensive team and All-NBA team for 13 seasons consecutively. He founded the “Tim Duncan Foundation” to raise funds to support health awareness and youth sports programs.

Tim Duncan Early Life

Tim Duncan was born and raised in a Christian family based in Saint Croix, US Virgin Islands. His father (William Duncan) was a bricklayer (mason) and his mother (Ione Duncan) was a professional midwife. Tim belongs to the Black ethnicity. He was the youngest child of his parents with two older sisters and a brother. During his school days, Tim Duncan had a dream of becoming an Olympic-level swimmer like his older sister. His parents also showed a supportive approach toward his dream and helped him excel at swimming. Tim became a standout in the 50, 100, and 400 meters freestyle.

Unfortunately, his dream of becoming a professional swimmer vanished in 1989. Hurricane Hugo destroyed the island’s only swimming pool with professional facilities. Tim Duncan’s NBA journey began in 1997 when San Antonio Spurs drafted him in the 1997 NBA draft. His popularity started witnessing a rise during his early years in the NBA. Duncan and Robinson together popularly known as the ‘Twin Towers’ and worked exceptionally well near the basket. Tim averaged 23.2 points and 12.4 rebounds per game in the 1999-2000 season. He averaged 22.2 points and 12.2 rebounds each game in the subsequent year. Also, he was named to the All-NBA and All-Defensive First Teams.

In the 2002-03 season, the Spurs started playing at the SBC Center on November 1. Tim posted 22 points and 15 rebounds for his team. The Spurs reached the finals and registered a victory against the New Jersey Nets to win its second NBA championship.

In July 2003, Tim Duncan signed a 7-year deal (US$122 million) with the Spurs. Duncan averaged 20 points and 10.6 rebounds per game in the 2005-06 regular season and helped his team to win another NBA title. Tim was also selected as a Western Conference starter for the 2007 NBA All-Star Game. Duncan became the oldest player to record a 20-20 game (23 points and 21 rebounds) in NBA history in December 2013.

Tim Duncan attained the milestone of 25000th point on November 14, 2014 in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers. On July 11, 2016, Tim Duncan announced his retirement after playing 19 seasons for the San Antonio Spurs.

Tim Duncan attended St. Dunstan’s Episcopal High School in Saint Croix. He showed good skills in school-level competitions and averaged 25 points per game as a senior.
