Mississippi State Bulldogs History

Mississippi State Bulldogs Football has a rich and diverse history that spans over a century. The program's early years, dating back to 1895 when they were known as the Mississippi A&M Aggies, were marked by various coaching changes and challenges, including a winless season in their first year. During this time, the school adopted its official colors, maroon and white.

Notable coaches like W. D. Chadwick and Allyn McKeen contributed to the program's growth and success in the early 1900s. McKeen led the Bulldogs to an undefeated season in 1940 and their only Southeastern Conference championship in 1941.

In the following years, the team experienced ups and downs under different coaches, with varying levels of success. The era of Coach Jackie Sherrill marked a significant turning point, with the Bulldogs achieving winning records, going to bowl games, and gaining recognition in the SEC.

Sylvester Croom's tenure as head coach was historic, as he became the first African American head football coach in Mississippi State and SEC history. The program saw improvements under his leadership, culminating in a Liberty Bowl victory in 2007.

Dan Mullen took over as head coach in 2009 and brought offensive innovation and success to the Bulldogs, including their rise to a No. 1 national ranking during the 2014 season. The team regularly participated in bowl games and achieved a competitive standing in the SEC.

Following Mullen's departure, Joe Moorhead and Mike Leach took turns as head coaches, each leaving their mark on the program with their unique coaching styles.

Tragically, Mike Leach passed away after a heart attack in December 2022. Following his passing, Zach Arnett was appointed as the head coach. The Mississippi State Bulldogs Football program has a history full of memorable moments, notable coaches, and achievements, and it continues to be a significant part of college football.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Coach

The current head coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs football team is Zach Arnett, who assumed the position in 2022. Zach Arnett is relatively new to the role, having taken over the program recently. Under his leadership, the team and its fans have high hopes for continued success and growth in the competitive world of college football. His tenure represents a new chapter in the Bulldogs' football history.
