Northern Illinois Huskies Football History

The Northern Illinois Huskies football program, established in 1899, has undergone a rich and evolving history. After early successes, including their first championship in 1938, the team experienced ups and downs, joining and leaving conferences. The Joe Novak era (1996–2007) saw a turnaround, marked by consecutive winning seasons. Jerry Kill (2008–2010) brought three bowl appearances, and Dave Doeren (2011–2012) secured an MAC Championship. Rod Carey (2013–2018) maintained competitiveness, clinching several MAC titles. Thomas Hammock (2019–present) took the helm, navigating challenges like a winless 2020 season. The 2021 season, led by QB Rocky Lombardi, showcased a MAC title win but ended with a loss in the Cure Bowl.

Northern Illinois Huskies Football Coach

Thomas Hammock, the current head coach of the Northern Illinois Huskies football team since 2019, brings a unique blend of experience and passion to the program. A former running back for the Huskies from 1999 to 2002, Hammock transitioned to coaching, notably serving as the running backs coach for the NFL's Baltimore Ravens from 2014 to 2018. Returning to NIU as head coach, Hammock has navigated challenges, including a pandemic-shortened season in 2020. While facing adversity, he continues to shape the team, focusing on resilience, skill development, and a commitment to the program's rich legacy.
