About BMW PGA Championship 2023
The BMW PGA season is upon us! The 2023 championship is all set and ready to take place from 13-17 September 2023, and the players will be gracing the greens of Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey, England.
The BMW PGA Championship is a yearly men's professional golf tournament held on the European Tour. It was established in 1955 by the Professional Golfers' Association and was initially named the British PGA Championship.
BMW PGA Championship 2023 History
Usually taking place in May during the UK's Spring Bank Holiday weekend, the BMW PGA Championship is hosted on the West Course at Surrey's Wentworth Club in England. The club also serves as the headquarters of the PGA European Tour, making the championship its flagship event. However, in 2019, the tournament's timing shifted to September as part of a larger calendar reconfiguration that moved the US PGA Championship to May.
Traditionally boasting the highest prize money on the tour, the championship's status changed in 2009 with the introduction of the Race to Dubai and the subsequent $10 million Dubai World Championship. While there are more financially rewarding events on the European Tour, like the majors and World Golf Championship events, these are managed by other organizations.
Notably, the BMW PGA Championship holds the distinction of being the European Tour's designated "Premier event" for the Official World Golf Rankings, offering the winner a minimum of 64 ranking points.
The victor of the championship earns exemptions into that season's U.S. Open as well as the subsequent three Open Championships. Colin Montgomerie secured a remarkable three-year winning streak in 2000, a feat that remains unmatched. Another standout moment occurred in 2021, when Billy Horschel became only the second American to clinch victory in the event, following Arnold Palmer's win in 1975.
