Every year, the PGA Tour's Valspar Championship is held on the Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida, which is located north of St. Petersburg.
Originally held as an alternative event in the fall and late summer, the tournament was created in 2000 under the name of the Tampa Bay Classic. It took the place of the JCPenney Classic, which has been staged annually since 1960 in central Florida and since 1990 at Innisbrook.
In October 2000, it was held in opposition to the Presidents Cup, and in September 2002, it coincided with the WGC-American Express Championship. It was supposed to take place in mid-September 2001, the same week as the WGC-American Express Championship, but both events had to be canceled due to the Tuesday, September 11 attacks.
As the final full-field event before the Tour Championship, the Tampa Bay event had a position in the schedule all to itself in late October (and early November in 2003) from 2003 to 2006. The title sponsor was the Chrysler Corporation.
The event, now known as the Valspar Championship, was given a four-year title sponsor in September 2013 when Valspar Corporation signed a contract. A three-year title sponsorship renewal was announced on March 9, 2016, by the PGA Tour, Valspar Corporation, and Copperhead Charities, the organization that hosts the Valspar Championship. This extension happened in the middle of the 2013–2017 initial contract period.
