Commentary

New Zealand will leave Guyana and head to Trinidad. The only thing they will be hoping for here is a change of luck and change in results. But their next game against the West Indies doesn't make their case any easier! Afghanistan on the other hand have two big wins in two matches. They too will head to Trinidad, but would love to take this pitch with them, wouldn't they? However, this win means a lot to them and goes a long way in kind of cementing their position in the Super-8s. Rashid Khan (Afghanistan captain): It's one of the greatest performances from us, specially in this format against such a tough team! I think New Zealand started to stifle us around the ninth over and we realized that quickly, turned things around and got a move on. We played out natural game and the positive intent helped us get over 100 runs in the final ten overs. I thought anything over 150 would give out bowling attack a lot of breathing space. The kind of bowling we have, we can give any line-up a run for their money and that's what happened tonight. The running between the wickets from Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz and then the effort in the field by us is just how we want to energize ourselves. The effort matters, more than anything else! Fazalhaq Farooqi has been highly impressive in this tournament up to now, he is bowling at the correct pace while swinging it, that is just what we need from him.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand captain): First, congratulations to Afghanistan! They played tremendous cricket, read the pitch well, batted superbly and finished it off with a stellar bowling effort. We were underdone yes, but this kind of a performance is not what we hope for. We need to get out acts together and turn things around in the next game. We had our opportunities but could not quite capitalize. I think it's about taking a step in the right direction now, we know what's coming, the West Indies in their conditions will be tough to face, but we will be up for it in Trinidad.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz is the Player of the Match, here is what he had to say: I think nothing is special than the win. We were waiting for this victory for three years. Finally we beat, the belief was there from the start. As I said in the start after the first innings that the wicket is not easy. Very happy with the performance. I think the way I wanted I didn't start that way. Me and Ibrahim were discussing to play good cricketing shots. We thought 120-130 would be a good score. Me and Azmatullah played some big shots towards the end. The win against such a big side against New Zealand is massive. Like as we know that we are a good opening pair. We have a very good communication with Ibrahim. When it's not my day, he goes against the bowlers and vice versa. From the coaches they are telling me to encourage the players as a wicket keeper. Everyone has to be active in the group. If I am not active the other players will be quite. Even if I am tired I try giving all the energy to the players.

This has been a clinical performance by Afghanistan! A performance to savour really! But many will still be in shock with this result, not with the New Zealand defeat, but with this margin of defeat!

Barring Glenn Phillips and Matt Henry, no other batter got to double digits. New Zealand lost 3 wickets inside the power play and as many as 7 inside the first 10 overs. Once than happens, there is no coming back.

Fazalhaq Farooqi up front and Rashid Khan after that made light work of this Blackcaps batting line-up! Farooqi cleaned Finn Allen up in the very first delivery of the innings with his trademark in-swinger. That set the tone, big time!

A lot rested on the shoulders of skipper Kane Williamson, but the very first ball of Rashid's spell got rid of him! A leg-break that Williamson thought he could steer down to third man ended up being a catch at slip!

New Zealand were definitely underdone coming into this tournament, but being professionals, there really cannot be any excuse for an outing like this. On the other end of the spectrum, Afghanistan's pace attack and batting prowess are backing up their spinners to string together winning performances!

The ball swung more for the Afghans, turned more too and talked a whole lot more compared to their Kiwi counterparts. The pitch played okay to be honest, but the batting from the semi-finalists of the last edition made it look really difficult.

15.2 Fazalhaq Farooqi to Matt Henry, WICKET! Afghanistan has annihilated New Zealand and won their first T20I against the Black Caps. Serious domination all through the match from Afghanistan. They have dominated New Zealand in all three departments. On a good-length around middle, Henry goes swinging across the line, ends up getting a top edge which carries all the way to Karim Janat stationed at deep fine leg and he doesn't make a mistake. A massive win for Afghanistan by 84 runs.
