Commentary

What a game we've witnessed today! Australia, with their never-say-die attitude, have pulled off a remarkable chase. England set a daunting total, but the Aussies never backed down, chasing it down with style. That’s all from this game. This is Meeth Agrawal and Darpan Tikiya, signing off until next time. Steve Smith (Australia captain): I thought the guys were outstanding from the outset. Travis and I were the only ones to miss out (laughs) and the middle order did a fantastic job. Regardless of what team we have, we would have bowled first. We knew dew would play a role. It looked like they would get 400, but it slowed up in the end in the first innings, and I thought 350 was chaseable. The boys did a good job with the ball and controlled the back end by mixing it up. The two keepers have been batting beautifully for a while now. Josh hits the ball all along the ground and has all the shots. It was a top effort from Inglis and also Alex with a brilliant hand.

Jos Buttler (England captain): It was a fantastic game. We had a great score on the board, but credit to Australia. Yeah, I think 350 is a pretty good score, but Dew was always the worry. Whatever happens, to chase down 350 is a great effort. He played brilliantly. He is effective at the top across formats. He can be incredibly consistent and delighted for him. Shame that he ended up on the losing cause. We have to focus on big partnerships and take the focus out of yourself. (On lack of proper fifth bowling option) I think those guys (Root and Liam) bowled really well today. We tried breaking the partnership between Inglis and Carey, but we have to give credit to the opposition. We have belief and are optimistic.

Josh Inglis (Player of the Match) says: "I am over the moon. Great win. Always tough to come up against England. A lot of things have to go right for a team to chase down 350. We had done a lot of talking before the game. We knew that it was always going to be better for batting in the second innings. The ball skidded on nicely with the dew. Alex Carey does not say much when he's batting. But we knew with Maxi (Glenn Maxwell) in the hut, if we can take it into the final 10, we have a good chance. I was trying to be pro-active. We knew that at the backend, it will skid on nicely. It is a short and sharp tournament. We are looking at one game at a time."

Australia has done it. Josh Inglis has done it. Australia have won a Champions Trophy match for the first time since 2009! After failing to win a single game in the 2013 and 2017 editions, they have started their 2025 campaign with a bang, pulling off the highest-ever successful chase in Champions Trophy history. And they did it without some of their key players!

This is the true Australian mentality! Coming off a 2-0 series loss to Sri Lanka, a team that didn’t even qualify for the Champions Trophy, Australia have once again shown why they are the team to beat in ICC events. The defending ODI World Cup champions have sent out a strong message to the rest of the teams: never count them out!

Earlier in the day, England posted the highest-ever total in Champions Trophy history, amassing 351/8, thanks to a sensational 165 off 143 from Ben Duckett and a solid 68 from Joe Root. However, despite Duckett's marathon knock, England ended up on the losing side.

Australia chased down the target with 15 balls to spare, but the run chase was far from straightforward. They were rocked early, losing Travis Head and captain Steve Smith cheaply to Jofra Archer and Mark Wood, leaving them reeling at 27/2.

That’s when Matthew Short and Marnus Labuschagne steadied the innings with a crucial 95-run stand. Just when it seemed Australia were back on track, Adil Rashid removed Labuschagne just shy of his fifty, and within three overs, Short too fell for a well-made 63 to Liam Livingstone.

At 138/4, England seemed to have the upper hand, but the wicketkeeper duo of Alex Carey and Josh Inglis had other plans. The pair took the attack to England, adding 146 runs at a rapid pace, putting Australia firmly in control. Carey fell for a well-compiled 69, but Glenn Maxwell walked in and wasted no time, smashing a quickfire 32* off 15 balls to apply the finishing touches.

Inglis, meanwhile, reached his maiden ODI century and finished off the game in style with a maximum. England’s lack of a proper fifth bowling option proved costly, as they couldn't defend their record-breaking total for long. Australia, despite missing key players, showed once again why they are a dominant force in ICC events.

47.3 Mark Wood to Josh Inglis, INGLIS HITS A SIX TO FINISH IT OFF! Half-volley at the leg stump. He unfurled a flamboyant flick and the leap from the man at the brink of the boundary at midwicket was not enough. Inglis has helped Australia take down the English here.
