Thanks a lot for joining us- Mohul Bhowmick and Pradeep- for this exciting game of cricket in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023. This turned out to be rather lopsided as South Africa rolled Australia over for a lowly total in response to the 311 that they put up in the first innings. Australia will be looking to come good in their next game, against Sri Lanka at the same venue on the 16th while South Africa play the Netherlands a day later at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. Thanks for tuning in!
Temba Bavuma (South Africa captain): Our score was only a bit over par. I am glad that we lost the toss. I found it quite tricky myself with the bat- I was scratching around a bit. To see Quinton (de Kock) do what he did was fantastic. I will be really greedy if I say that we could have done better. This was a close-to-perfect game for us. With the ball, we did exceptionally well. We did well in all three phases. All of our bowlers were on fire today. We showed real character today. We will celebrate this performance and then we will come back tomorrow to find ways to get better and better.
Pat Cummins (Australia captain): I thought Quinny batted particularly well, couldn't get the breakthrough, from where they were and ended, we thought we could chase it. It looked like hard work out there tonight, their bowlers bowled really well, zipped around compared to the day. It's really hard to say, us batting first or not, if we want to be challenging for this tournament, you got to find a way and take wickets in all conditions and for the batters to score runs. Not much needs to be said tonight, everyone's hurting, will regroup and will try and make amends. I wouldn't say one thing, may be they got a few more we would've liked and 177 off the mark as well, few things to tidy up.
Quinton de Kock is the Player of the Match! Here's what he has to say: Great win for the boys, to be honest we didn't really know how the wicket was going to play, we assesed the conditions very well, just played accordingly and we knew as long as we stuck to our strengths and will come up on top. Myself and Tem, assessed the conditions, came to know what's happening on the wicket, conveyed the message with what's happening in the middle and discussed our scoring options. We scored above par, we knew playing here, or seen here and does get harder batting second under lights. It was certainly, sweaty, humid, but our bowlers kept hitting the lengths we discussed, didn't get much of a sniff to them and bowled really well. I think we pretty pleased with ourselves, but only two games into the tournament, anything can happen, World Cups are strange tournament, thanks can happening quickly and will take it game by game.
The performance that Australia put up today would have made their former cricketers turn their heads away in distaste. This was not the way any four-time winners bat, and the reason why the Kangaroos have not been able to get their hands on a trophy since 2007.
None of the Aussie batters put up a fight today and capitulated under the pressure put on them by the Proteas bowlers. Mitchell Marsh threw his wicket away as did fellow opener David Warner.
While Steve Smith's dismissal seemed a tad controversial, Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis were done in by the fabulous South African bowling.
Marnus Labuschagne was the only Australian batsman to put up a fight, and it was disappointing to see him depart four runs short of a well-deserved half-century.
Kagiso Rabada seemed to be on fire for the South Africans today and ran in with full intensity. The idea of bringing him on as one change seems to be working for South Africa.
While Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen ran in with the new ball, Rabada bowled first-change and this gave him some breathing space. South Africa now have two wins in as many games just as Australia have two losses.
The two have had vastly contrasting campaigns so far and if the Kangaroos intend to qualify for the semi-finals, they will have to pull their socks up big time.
And South Africa finally wrap this game up! Such a comprehensive win for the Proteas who completely out-batted, out-bowled and out-fielded the Aussies.
40.5 Tabraiz Shamsi to Josh Hazlewood, OUT! STRAIGHT UP IN THE AIR AND TAKEN! It's all over, Australia succumb to another huge defeat, it's second defeat in a row and South Africa win two from two with this. Length delivery on the off-stump, Hazlewood has a wild slog across the line, but top edged it straight up and Rabada fittingly at mid-on takes a sitter.
Josh Hazlewood c Kagiso Rabada b Tabraiz Shamsi 2 (2b 0x4 0x6)
40.4 Tabraiz Shamsi to Josh Hazlewood, drops it short, just outside the off-stump. Hazlewood went back and cuts it past the diving backward point for a couple.
Josh Hazlewood, LHB, is the last batter for Australia.
Cummins' resistance goes on for only so long! He perishes, and it seems with him, Australia's chances of winning this game.
