Commentary

That brings us to the end of our coverage of an absolute classic! It's been an absolute privilege to narrate the Test match to you people, and we hope you enjoyed the same! The tone for the rest of the 5-match series has been well and truly set! Both the teams head to the north of London for the second Test starting on the 28th. Keep an eye on our tabs for our coverage of that, and of course, a lot, lot more! This is Rajarshi, signing off on behalf of Pratyush. Good night!

Pat Cummins, Australia captain: (On the Australian support) They've been huge all week, our supporters. (On chances of an Australian win when he walked in) Honestly, pretty good, the wicket didn't have any demons. I though the game was within grasp. I said nothing to Lyon, he walked past and said to himself, "Nice shot, Garry!", think he was happy (Laughs all around). (On Australia's approach) Not too sure, both teams spoke about playing by their own styles. Don't know which one was better, but it makes for good entertainment. (On how good Usman Khawaja was) He was, incredible composure in both innings, played in his own pace. He's been a class player over the last two years. He had a good feel for the wicket, but everyone chipped in and played their part. Lyon's huge with the ball, he takes key wickets. He's an absolute superstar, having played 120 Tests. (On whether this makes up for Headingley 2019) Don't know what you're talking about, mate!

Ben Stokes, England captain: I'm very proud of my team. To take it to the end like that on day 5.... it was so up and down. That's one of the games that I'll never forget being a part of. Hopefully, we have managed to attract the attention of more people in England and Australia and ensured that they follow the Ashes! Losing hurts, regardless of what you've done. We're going to continue making moves at the right time. There won't be much to complain about if we end up on the wrong side of results. (On the declaration in the first innings) No, no regrets, I saw that as an opportunity to pounce on. No batsman likes to walk out to bad with 20 minutes of play left in the day. I sensed an opportunity to pick up a couple of wickets. I feel it would have been great to have Moeen there, but Root did a great job. For Moeen to go through all that pain and put himself through it....I have no complaints. Root batted incredibly for your senior batsman to play the way he did yesterday. That got us off to a roll. The effort from Broad and Robinson towards the end was incredible. Broad is absolutely cooked, he has put his body on the line, and I hope long it may continue!

Usman Khawaja has been adjudged the Player of the Match. Here is what he has to say: I'm not going to lie, I was s*****ng myself for five minutes there. It's so heart-wrenching, watching on like this. It's one thing being out there in the middle but when you're watching it's completely different. Can't imagine what the fans felt like. That was an unbelievable game, the ebbs and flows of it. I watched Edgbaston in 2005. I was there when Stoksey played that knock at Headingley, but this is definitely one of the best matches I've played in. I couldn't really watch it with the guys, there was too much nervous energy. So, I was watching it on the tele and could hear the reactions. Marnus walked in and said you cannot move. It's right up there. Personally, for me, I've never felt like this after a Test. I know it's not the end of the series. It's been awesome. (Struggles in the past) I was young in 2013, learning my craft. The last Test series was pretty tough work for the batters unless you're Steve Smith. It's a good start to this one. Four more to go.

This is the highest successful run rate by Australia in an Ashes contest since 1948! History at Edgbaston. The previous record was when they chased 404 at Leeds, all those years ago.

They were down, down for most of the Test match, but they were never really out of it! Australia are never, ever out of a contest as intense and immense as this one! It's the Ashes, after all, and we were bound to see their best emerge! England thought that they had the game in the bag once Khawaja dragged on off Stokes, but little did they know what was to come! Stokes' reluctance on taking the new ball and the overuse of Root's off-breaks prove to be costly. Despite the vociferous support from the Hollies and rest of Edgbaston, it's the arch-rivals who take the lead in the Ashes!

Australia were well-placed going into the final session. With just over 90 to get, they had two well-set batters in the middle, and had reason to sit back comfortably. However, Green's wicket seemed to spur a sense of concern within their camp. Robinson was the one to break the partnership, and sent the decibel levels to astronomical limits! Alex Carey came in and found it really tough to start with, but began to settle in nicely.

Carey and Khawaja stabilized the situation for a bit, until the England captain brought himself on and did the exact job he is known for with the ball - conjure wickets out of nowhere. Khawaja, the well-set Khawaja - the best Australian batter in this Test match, dragged one on from well outside off stump. With the assurance of Khawaja taken away, both Carey and Cummins then went onto attack mode. They were helped by the fact that Joe Root was dishing out a few hittable deliveries every now and then, and Carey benefitted from two sharp missed chances as well.

Root eventually hung onto a return chance offered by Carey, and suddenly, the tide shifted dramatically back towards the hosts. Cummins, though, kept going, effectively smashing Root out of the attack. He was extremely clear with his shot selection, choosing the right deliveries to attack. Stokes went back to Broad and Robinson, but that, or the new ball later on didn't have any effect, as Cummins and Lyon both went on to play their strokes.

Broad and Robinson went on to bang it in short, stopping the flow of runs briefly. But Cummins and Lyon still managed to pinch those singles, and it was the Australian captain who ended up hitting the winning runs, fittingly. Stay tuned, the presentations are coming right up!

Cummins has helped Australia pull off a heist! Scenes of jubilation in the Australian camp! Bats thrown, helmets gone, and both the batters embrace as the crowd at Edgbaston is stunned into silence! The Australian section, though, are dancing at the gallery! Edgbaston hasn't looked more yellow in this Test match!

92.3 Ollie Robinson to Pat Cummins, IT'S GONE FOR FOUR! COMETH THE HOUR, COMETH PAT CUMMINS! Australia have done it. What a player. What a partnership. What a game! Another short one around the off-stump line and Cummins managed to fend it off the thickish outside edge towards third man. Brook and Crawley made a hash of it there and Cummins takes his helmet off to race away in celebration as soon as he realizes that. The ghosts of Edgbaston 2005 have been buried. Australia have drawn the first blood in this series. They've clinched a thriller by 2 wickets and have taken a 1-0 lead in Ashes!
