Commentary

Another weekend draws to a close at the 2023 World Cup. Quite the action we've witnessed - it began with South Africa scripting a stunning heist over Pakistan before New Zealand nearly pulled off an epic against Australia. Logan van Beek had more reason to dance his heart out as the Netherlands pocketed their second win, pretty much ending Bangladesh's campaign in the process much like India have done the same to England today.

And the action rolls along - it's an Asian battle tomorrow as Afghanistan, after a six-day break post their historic win over Pakistan, face Sri Lanka in Pune. Both teams need this win as they enter this contest with a lot of confidence in their ranks. A grinning Rohit Sharma as India walk away with a win in his 100th game as captain in international cricket. Those grins will be seen on the faces of all those in that Indian dressing room tonight as the semifinals beckon. Another win and they'll officially have the 'Q' to their name but with a lot more games to be played around the competition, you'd think they've done enough to pass through. The way they're playing though, they will believe that they can go the full distance.

A distinctly opposite tone and expression as far as Jos Buttler is concerned. It's hard being the captain of a side that not only entered the tournament as defending champions but have played nowhere close to the kind of cricket one would have expected from an assortment of superstars in their ranks. They've been incredibly disappointing and with a fifth defeat in six games and their net run-rate sinking further, it's curtains now as far as their title defense is concerned. Again, they're not out officially but practically speaking, there can't be a way back after yet another meek surrender. Lots of questions will be asked and one reckons a major overhaul could be on the cards post this World Cup.

Rohit Sharma (India captain): This was a game of a lot of character in the squad. When the times were tough, all our experienced players stood up at the right time and got the game for us. (On winning batting first) Looking at how the tournament has gone for us, batting second in the first five games, we had to come and bat here - we were challenged upfront by the new ball bowlers. But for us, we knew the pitch had something in it. We just wanted to get to a total we could play with. I thought we were not great with the bat today. Losing three wickets in the first powerplay isn't the ideal situation but when you are in a situation like that you are looking to create a long partnership. A couple of guys threw it away at the end including myself. All I was thinking of was to be positive and put away the ball in my area. But yeah we were a few runs short. It's not something you see everyday when you have a total like that. You know when you start your innings that somehow you've got to try and find a couple of wickets in the first few overs. When you have them you can put the pressure back on the opposition. We can always rely on the seamers and bank on them to get those wickets and they did that. There was some swing and seam and I thought they put the ball in the right areas. I think so (that we have the best rounded attack). We've got good balance there, a couple of good spinners and the seamers who can bowl in different conditions. When you have a bowling lineup like that it's very important that the batters put the runs on the board, give them something to work with and rely on them to do the magic (grins).

Jos Buttler (England captain): Very disappointed. At the halfway stage, chasing 230 seeing how well we bowled as well, we should have fancied ourselves. Same old story. I wasn't sure if the dew would come or not. Just the gut feel said that we had to chase. I think we've bowled this tournament to create pressure for wickets. If we were given 230 at the halfway stage we'd have been happy with that. I wanted to soak some pressure up and break that momentum that India had. It wasn't about scoreboard pressure but about coming through that phase. We're falling short whichever way we're doing it at the moment. Some top players and we're a long way short of our best. (On the bowling) A great start in the powerplay. The guys found some movement there. The ground fielding was as good as it's been. It felt today was the day that it was all turning around but the way we batted we didn't back that up. We've still got lots to play for.

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is the Player of the Match for his outstanding knock of 87. Here's what he has to say: Looking at where we were after the first 10 overs, it was important to create that partnership. Myself and KL had that partnership. Slightly challenging pitch to start with. As the game went on it got slightly better to bat. But we're very happy with the performance. I've got the experience to bat the situation as well. It's just not about going out there and playing my shots. You've got to use the experinece and do whatever was necessary for the team and it was important for me to take the game deep, get that partnership and take the team to a good total. The new ball was a bit challenging and as the game went on, the ball got softer and it was not easy to rotate strike. But we said in the middle that we've got to keep digging in. We were 20-30 runs short in the end but I'll take that win anyway.

Chak De! India rings out loud at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. This was a fabulous crowd that turned out in large numbers. A sea of blue (duh) and they were not left disappointed as the Men in Blue delivered a classic.

They didn't have much to work with. But it was something to make a fist out of. Team India were determined to show that 229 was worth plenty more than on face value. And so they did in incredible fashion to all but secure a berth in the semifinals for all practical purposes even as the 'Q' is yet to go against their name officially.

India were going to win this only by bundling England out. They needed early inroads from their seamers to that end and once again, Jasprit Bumrah delivered. A double-whammy had Dawid Malan and Joe Root back in quick succession as the ball swerved around off the deck even as a lot of dew was setting in. Ben Stokes looked to whack his way out but got out in ungainly fashion to that sorcerer named Mohammed Shami, who soon had Jonny Bairstow also playing onto his stumps.

England were crashing down and skipper Jos Buttler, who endured a miserable World Cup prior to this contest, was tasked with the rescue act. He looked to dig deep but then came the third magician named Kuldeep Yadav, who made a mess of the stumps to send him packing as he took his team's hopes with him. Ravindra Jadeja was as nagging as he could possibly be and with Mohammed Siraj also getting better with each passing over, England just had no wiggle-room or breathing space.

Liam Livingstone curbed his natural instincts to take it deep even as the asking rate shot up. Once Moeen Ali nicked off, Chris Woakes walked past one and Livingstone played all around a sweep though, England's hopes - however faint they were - had diminished for good. Shami and Bumrah then did the needful to clean up the lower order as India, defending a score for the first time in this tournament, wrapped things up by a massive 100-run margin.

And that's game, set and match! It's the magician named Jasprit Bumrah who finishes what he started. Fireworks go off at the Ekana Cricket Stadium as India annihilate England by 100 runs to consign them to a fourth straight defeat for the first time in ODI World Cup history!

Too late in getting his bat down and the ball demolishes the stumps. Just about sums up England's campaign - all in tatters, and with no hope of regaining any sort of spark!
