Seven matches, seven wins and India stroll into the semifinals. Dominance of the highest order from Rohit Sharma and Co. and fittingly, they have the 'Q' against their name. It's hard to pinpoint a weakness at this point with the only concern perhaps being the fitness of Hardik Pandya. But what a display this has been by the Men in Blue to reiterate why they are the favorites to win the whole affair. Their biggest challenge yet awaits next on Sunday though as they face South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. With a berth in the semis in the bag, India will certainly embrace that challenge with both hands though.
As for Sri Lanka, this has been a nightmare. A second one in a fortnight or so against India and this is all but curtains as far as their campaign is concerned. Two more games to go as they now head to Delhi to face Bangladesh on Monday. The semifinal chances might be all but over for all practical purposes but they still have plenty to play for with a spot in the Champions Trophy 2025 up for grabs.
Rohit Sharma (India captain): Very happy knowing that we have officially qualified now. It has be a good effort from the entire squad. When we started in Chennai, our first goal was to qualify in the semis. We wanted individuals to stand up and throughout the seven matches, every player chipped in. Lot of credit goes to the batting lineup to get to that score and then obviously the seamers were brilliant. Yea, I mean Shreyas as far as I know him, he is a very strong lad. Strong in his mind, he did what is exactly known for. The couple of sixes he hit early o showed he is there for the challenge. He is really working hard and today it was on display. Siraj is another quality bowler for us. If he does that, its always bodes well. Everyone who has got the opportunity, even Surya in the last game. Very happy with the boys. It's very pleasing to see when things are going our way. To produce two magnificent bowling performances shows the quality of the seamers. They have got so much skill set, all in all it was very pleasing to watch and I hope they continue to do that way. He is absolutely important with the DRS. I have left it to the bowleer and the keeper. I have to find the individuals I can trust in DRS. Playing as an unit, couple of decisions goes can go either ways. It was fifty fifty today. South Africa are playing good cricket and it will be a great spectacle for the people of Kolkata and they are gonna enjoy it.
Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka captain): Ofcourse we are very disappointed. They bowled really well in the night. Little bit seam and swing and unfortunately we lost the game. I can't really comment on the toss. The wicket looked a bit slow so I opted to bowl. It became better under lights as the ball seamed around. Madushanka bowled well in the opening spell and then in the middle overs. We dropped two catches of Shubman and Kohli which hurt us. They bowled really well in the first six overs. Bowled wicket to wicket. They are great bowlers, credit goes to their fast bowling unit. We have two more matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand we will hope to come back strong.
Its time for the captains to have a word.
There were a host of celebrities who turned up at the Wankhede Stadium to cheer the Indian team. They certainly had the time of their life alright. Here's an in-pictures look into the list of celebrities in presence today!👇
Mohammed Shami is the Player of the Match for his spectacular spell of 5/18. Here's what he has to say: Firstly I want to thank the Almighty. The hard work we are putting in, that's why you are able to see that 'toofan' (thunder). We are performing as a unit. I always try to bowl in the right areas and stay in good rhythm. I focus on the right lengths and am getting the right results too. It is tough but I'll say it again that your rhythm has to be good. Especially in white ball cricket you have to bowl the right areas if you get help off the wicket. There's no rocket science - just recovering well, eating well and trying to keep my mind as free as possible. Most importantly, the support that the fans give us all over India. Even when we go abroad the kind of support from the Indian fans. Thanks to all, please keep supporting us this same way.
It was a capitulation of the highest order from Sri Lanka as the India new ball bowlers breathed fire and castled them for just in overs. After a sensational start from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, it was Mohammed Shami who then just carried on his exceptional World Cup form, getting his second fifer of the competition. India also became the first side to qualify for the semi-final after winning their 7th game in a row. The target or 357 was always going to be a massive task for Sri Lanka but not many would have predicted them to fold out in the manner they did.
Jasprit Bumrah started with a pearler as Pathum Nissanka was trapped right in front of the stumps before Mohammed Siraj came in and bagged a wicket of his very first ball as well. Dimuth Karunaratne was caught on the crease while Sadeera Samarawickrama wafted at one back of a length delivery and ended up giving a straightforward catch to the slip cordon. Bumrah bowled another quite over before Siraj cleaned up Kusal Mendis with another away swinging length delivery and he didn't had any idea whatsoever.
Charith Asalanka and Angelo Mathews tried to stitch a partnership and that is when Rohit Sharma introduced Mohammed Shami and he didn't disappoint. Again a couple of wickets followed as he bagged Asalanka and Dushan Hemantha with back-to-back deliveries. Mathews looked to bid sometime in the middle. Shami continued to breathe fire as he bounced out Dushmantha Chameera with a well-directed short one.
Kasun Rajitha and Maheesh Theekshana managed to get them over the 36-run mark, which was the lowest score in a World Cup match. However soon after, Shami bagged his fifth as Rajitha nicked a length delivery straight to the slip fielder. Eventually, it was Ravindra Jadeja who finished the match off with the wicket of Dilshan Madushanka as India registered a mammoth 302-run win
What a demolition job from the Indian bowlers and Indian dream is well and truly alive. What an astounding performance from the fast bowlers. Shami became the highest wicket taker with a fifer. A sorry tale for Sri Lanka. 50 all out in Asia Cup final and now 55 all out in World Cup. It cannot get lower than this for the Lankans. Vande Mataram being played in the stadium as India continues their march towards the World Cup trophy.
