Ireland fail to win the crucial moments in the game yet again, and so, despite displaying some very good cricket early on, they fail to grasp a victory once again. They did exceptionally well with the ball throughout the innings, but that 19-run last over took a lot of momentum away as they went into the chase.

Both Jacob Duffy and Lockie Ferguson were rapid, but it was the change-ups in pace that accounted for the Ireland top-order. Balbirnie's dry run continued as he found the fielder at extra cover, Delany and Stirling were accounted for by Ferguson in the same over. Harry Tector hit a boundary and then smashed one straight to Ish Sodhi at backward point.

The middle-order trio of Curtis Campher, Lorcan Tucker and George Dockrell tried to put up a fight after that. Tucker skipped around his crease, trying to throw off the spinners, but he ended up nicking behind for a run-a-ball 11. The Campher-Dockrell duo showed a little more promise, with more boundaries starting to come as the New Zealanders sneaked overs in, but soon after, Dockrell found Lockie Ferguson at long-on to a filthy long-hop from Sodhi.

The telling blow came three balls later, when Lockie Ferguson was re-introduced into the attack and he pinged a yorker and bruised Campher's toes right in front of the stumps. The Ireland lower-order did go down swinging, especially Mark Adair, but Ireland were never going to get anywhere near. New Zealand take the honours in the first of the three T20Is, both the teams will now meet each other on the same field on Wednesday.

Mitchell Santner, New Zealand captain: Obviously it wasn't easy, the way Glenn played and showed composure was great. It's about trying to build those partnerships with the bat so that we give our bowlers something to work with. We kind of lost wickets early on, but the Neesham innings, Glenn's innings on such a niggly wicket helped us. Lockie did well, on a niggly wicket today he showed how good he is with his changes in pace. We've come up against a very good Irish team. Had it not been for Glenn, we were looking at a total of 140-150 which might not have been enough.

Andrew Balbirnie, Ireland captain: We started pretty well with the ball, had a good powerplay. They batted well in the last 10 overs and set up a good total. We were looking to chase about 150, We didn't start well in the powerplay. We bowled pretty well up top, adopted to the wicket quickly. We did have a couple of good partnerships with the bat, but they weren't substantial.

Glenn Phillips: It was a tough start. Ireland bowled really well at the start but to get 170 was outstanding. It was a tough game but it's satisfying to win matches like this in the end
