MATCH SUMMARY
Lahore Qalandars, batting first - 168 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their 20 overs; Abdullah Shafique 52 (28) Islamabad United, batting second - 162 all out in 19.4 overs; Azam Khan 40 (28)
Lahore Qalandars beat Islamabad United by 6 runs and go through to the final.
Player of the Match: David Wiese - 28* (8) (1x4, 3x6) and a brilliant defence of 8 runs in the last over.
This was a match worthy of an Eliminator! The 2nd innings in particular swung from one side to another as we could not make out, till the last ball of the match was bowled, as to who would win the match! In the end, David Wiese and the Lahore Qalandars held their nerve to pull off a spectacular win!
David Wiese finished the 1st innings with a flurry, taking Lahore to 168 and he came back to finish the match with a magnificent last over, defending only 8 runs. He was rightly adjudged the player of the match.
Islamabad United got themselves to a very strong position to win the match, courtesy a superb 50-run partnership between Alex Hales and Azam Khan, but a piece of magic in the field from Haris Rauf got Azam run out, and then, Haris himself got the wicket of Hales to make things really interesting. Asif Ali then threatened to take the match away via his big hitting, but Haris Rauf got him out too to leave 8 runs for David Wiese to defend.
Islamabad got off to a very indifferent start, where runs were coming from one ball, and wickets falling off the next ball! That had to be fixed by Hales and Azam later on, but Lahore were always in the game and making a match out of every opportunity they got.
Haris Rauf, Zaman Khan and Shaheen Afridi took 2 wickets each, while David Wiese got the last wicket to win the match for the Qalandars. There were also some fantastic catches and breathtaking run outs in between from Lahore.
Still, the fielding can improve a lot more for them, heading into the final.
POST-MATCH PRESENTATION
Player of the Match, David Wiese: Unbelievable game, unbelievable team effort! To be honest, it got a little bit easier for me to bowl the last over as I thought that the pressure was on their batters to get those runs, I also managed to get those yorkers in at the right time and got the job done. It is amazing to be able to play in front of such a supportive crowd.
Islamabad United captain, Shadab Khan: If we had played more smartly before the last over, I think we could have won, so it won't be right to blame Wasim Jr's decision not to take singles off the first two balls. Yes it would have been nice to win but I can be proud of the way we played right through the tournament, with all the injuries, we put up a good show. We will come back better next time for sure.
Lahore Qalandars captain, Shaheen Afridi: It was a great fight shown by our players, Wiese was great with both bat and ball. We did not give up at all. I am glad that I could get the wickets initially. When I bowled the no-ball, I thought that there is no need to panic, and focused on the next delivery. It has been terrific to get such great support from the Lahore crowd, hopefully, we can gift them the tournament.
Phil Salt: Surely one of the closest matches I've been part of. It see-sawed all the way but were able to get the win. It is unbelievable to play in Lahore, I can't hear anything at the moment. 100%, we've got a chance to win the game but whoever plays the best on the day will come out with the win in the end. Can't wait for it
An amazing win for Lahore Qalandars in Eliminator 2 by 6 runs with 2 balls to spare!
20.0
19.4 David Wiese to Waqas Maqsood, WICKET! LAHORE WIN! Wiese is fist-bumping out in the middle and rightly so! It was a full ball bowled on the middle stump, Maqsood heaves it towards Shafique at midwicket, who takes a good catch at the edge of the boundary
Waqas Maqsood c Abdullah Shafique b David Wiese 0 (1)
Seven runs to win from three balls!
Waqas Maqsood, LHB, is at the crease.
19.3 David Wiese to Mohammad Wasim Jr, RUN-OUT! A slower ball bowled on middle and off, Wasim drags it to the leg-side and tries to sneak in a second but he cannot! He is caught short of his crease!
Mohammad Wasim Jr run out (Abdullah Shafique/Phil Salt) 5 (7)
