Peshawar Zalmi win the match by winning the Super Over.
Player of the Match: Wahab Riaz, for his magnificent Super Over bowling, giving away only 5 runs.
At the end of the 19th over of the 2nd innings, no one gave Lahore Qalandars a chance to win. It was all about going through the motions and finishing the last over to get on to the play-offs. But Shaheen Afridi's unbelievable hitting in that last over turned the match on its head! 24 runs were required off the last 6 six balls, and Shaheen scored 23, taking the match into a SUPER OVER!
In the Super Over, with Fakhar Zaman and Harry Brook batting, Wahab Riaz, the Peshawar Zalmi captain bowled 6 incredible balls to restrict the score to only 5 for Lahore Qalandars, that got knocked off easily by Shoaib Malik, with two fours off the first two balls of Shaheen Afridi's over.
Chasing 159 to win, Lahore lost wickets at regular intervals, right through the innings, even though the runs came thick and fast at the beginning of the chase. Phil Salt and Kamran Ghulam provided just the kind of start Lahore Qalandars were looking for, but could not stay there for long, as a lot of responsibility suddenly fell on the shoulders of the experienced Mohammad Hafeez to bail them out of a tricky situation.
Hafeez and Sohail Akhtar did put up a decent partnership but that too was broken at the most inopportune time for Lahore and after that, it was just Hafeez, who was ranging the lone battle. Then came a certain Shaheen Afridi, who tried to give some good company to Hafeez, but lost his senior partner in the process. After that, it was the last over mayhem from the left-handed batter that made the match so interesting!
With the ball, Wahab Riaz was special, picking up 2 wickets and giving away only 19 runs in his four overs, while Amad Butt, Khalid Usman and Arshad Iqbal were all very good. Shoaib Malik got the all-important wicket of Fakhar Zaman off the very first delivery of the innings.
In the 1st innings, it was Shoaib Malik again who top scored for Peshawar, and the late impetus provided by Hussain Talat and Khalid Usman was the reason why they could post a total in excess of 150. There were some useful runs from Haider Ali, Kamran Akmal and Hazratullah Zazai as well.
Fawad Ahmed and Mohammad Hafeez were the pick of the bowlers for Lahore Qalandars, taking 3 wickets between them and giving away only 42 runs in their combined 7 overs of spin.
The fielding effort from both sides needs a lot of improvement heading into the play-offs, as there have been far too many opportunities missed, both inside and outside the 30-yard circle.
POST-MATCH PRESENTATION
Lahore Qalandars captain, Shaheen Afridi: Batting practice is on at the nets to improve my performance with the bat for my teams, including Pakistan. We could have fielded much better in the 1st innings. If we hold our nerves, and execute our plans well, we can do very well against Multan in the next match.
Peshawar Zalmi captain and Player of the Match, Wahab Riaz: Pressure was on in the Super Over but thankfully, I could restrict the batters to as low a score as possible. Shaheen was brilliant in that last over, hats off to him! Mohammad Haris is a breathtaking cricketer, he will definitely go a long way in his career. When you have a target of 6 runs, it's always better to have someone like Shoaib Malik batting in the Super Over, who can take the runs by running well between the wickets also.
Mohammad Haris: It depends on the attitude with which to go out to bat. I always want to contribute in a manner that benefits the team. (On the catch) It comes down to game awareness - I know that I have to go for the catch with the hope that I don't drop it. I feel very proud that with a high-class bowler running in, the captain trusted me to go out in the Super Over. It became easy for us in the Super Over with just 6 runs to get.
Peshawar Zalmi win the SUPER OVER with 4 balls to spare and get the match won, finally!
1.0
0.2 Shaheen Afridi to Shoaib Malik, FOUR! ALL OVER! As easy as that in the end and given how things transpired, this was a bit of an anticlimax. What a game we've had nonetheless though! Full and angling down leg, just a little tickle around the corner is all Malik has to get to send it to the fence and that'll be all for the league stage. Peshawar Zalmi beat Lahore Qalandars in the Super Over!
0.1 Shaheen Afridi to Shoaib Malik, FOUR! EXPERTLY DONE! All of Malik's experience coming into play there - length delivery from around the wicket, a hint of room on offer and he just uses the pace to steer it late through the vacant real estate along backward point. The lightning quick outfield ensures that third man has no chance whatsoever in the deep.
SUPER OVER Update
Shaheen Afridi will bowl for Lahore Qalandars.
Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Haris will open for Peshawar Zalmi.
