The expectations were high for this contest after the Netherlands emerged victorious against South Africa but they can't replicate their heroics against Sri Lanka. The ball swung a lot in the morning and Edwards' decision to bat first on this track backfired. They were reeling at 91-6 at one stage but van Beek and Sybrand did an exceptional job to help the team post a competitive total.
Sri Lanka's batting has been their weapon in this tournament and they didn't disappoint their fans. After three defeats on the trot, they finally opened their account in this tournament. There isn't much entertainment in this contest but there could be a lot in the game happening in Mumbai. England are chasing a mammoth total against South Africa, so head over there to catch all the LIVE updates. For now, it's time to end the coverage here, until next time, this is Pragadeesh and Pradeep signing off
Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka captain) - Very happy to get the win. We have done well in all departments. The bowlers did well in the first 10 overs. There was a bit of struggle at the top but Sadeera batted really well. Rajitha had three overs left, so I decided not to use him fully. Pathum and Sadeera batted well in the middle overs. I have a lot of confidence in this batting unit
Scott Edwards (Netherlands captain): It was a bit of an interesting one, we obviously didn't start well and got ourselves to a competitive game, 260-270 and well and truly in the game, but the first 30 overs, we just didn't quite get it right, we managed to take wickets but we let too many boundary balls. Our bowlers been pretty good throughout the tournament, I suppose and top order didn't do the job today. I don't know we changed too much, just needed to execute better. We sort of had a feeling that it would turn a bit later, I thought Aryan Dutt got more turn than the other bowlers, he bowled exceptionally and Colin too. Again, our batting hasn't quite clicked yet, probably getting starts, but not kicking on, guys like Sybrand and Logan down the order chipped in with 130 run partnership which is definitely strength of us, ideally we get those few more of runs at the top of the order. Not too bothered either way, we've had success both batting first and bowling first, we won't stress too much about it. Got down to 8 balls in the end, but there were probably cruising at the backend.
Sadeera Samarawickrama is the Player of the Match! Here's what he has to say: Really happy to finish the game, we needed a win and haven't done well in the last three games and happy today. When I went to bat, the wicket was not easy and it was spinning, the pace bowlers were bowling good lines and lengths, the plan was to bat deep and play maximum overs and do basic things. I knew it's going to be hard later part, wicket was turning and gripping everytime, the plan was to bat deep and we can't chase it in the 40 over mark and needed to bat long. Today it was hard for the spinners, wicket was slow and the ball was gripping, it was hard to bat as well.
Sri Lanka won by 5 wickets Sadeera Samarawickrama 91(107) | Sybrand Engelbrecht 70 (82) Dilashan Madushanka 4-49(9.4) | Aryan Dutt 3-44(10)
Sri Lanka get their first win on the board in this tournament, all thanks to an impressive knock from Sadeera Samarawickrama. He didn't show any rush as he stuck to his guns throughout and helped his team cross the finish line.
At the start, Dutt got rid of Kusal Perera and Mendis' stay was short-lived too. The Dutch put the opposition under the pump but Nissanka was fearless in the middle as he kept the scoreboard ticking with boundaries at regular intervals. Bas de Leede struggled with his line and length and he had a bad day at the office. Nissanka took him on in his first spell and he didn't bowl well either in his second spell. Nissanka got to his half-century but van Meekeren removed him instantly after the drinks break. Soon after, Asalanka joined hands with Sadeera and the duo played risk-free Cricket. They worked the ones and twos in the gap and didn't bother to play any big shots.
At one point, Edwards persisted with Dutt at one end as the offie was all over Asalanka, and eventually he won the battle against the Southpaw. Sadeera's presence and his ability to rotate the strike with ease didn't allow the Dutch to get ahead in this game and Dhananjaya played a handy knock in that 57-run partnership. The duo took the game deep and even though Netherlands didn't allow the opposition to cross the finish easily, they are 25-30 runs short on this track
48.2 Colin Ackermann to Dushan Hemantha, FOUR! THAT IS THAT! Hemantha saw enough, he takes matter into his own hands and finishes things off. Finally a win here for Sri Lanka as they register their two points on the points table. Spots the batter coming down the track, Ackermann pulls the length back but Hemantha goes through his shot as he whacked it down to long-on, goes one bounce into the ropes to seal the deal!
48.1 Colin Ackermann to Dushan Hemantha, length delivery on the off-stump, Hemantha strides out to play across the line, but gets a leading edge to point.
Four dots on the trot and we still wait for Sri Lanka to reach the target. Have to give Credit to the Dutch for not allowing the opposition to cross the finish line easily
