It's a steamy day in Galle so it will dry the pitch further. There has been some work done. Looks pretty flat. Batters using their feet, further down it's dry and few cracks are opening. In the opposite side there is some scarring created by Starc's follow-through. It's quite interesting what it does to you. Nathan Lyon will go about his business. The heat is certainly on Sri Lanka. There will be lot of challenges on this pitch so Sri Lanka will have their work cut out.

Steve Smith (captain, Australia): It worked out well, Usman and Travis started off well. Especially Usman, he batted really well and played good shots. Starc did a good job with the ball in hand the spinners did well. I think it broke up, the first day didn't reflect the score. I think we batted really well and allowed us to put on a good score. The beauty of having three spinners is you can rotate really well. We have got to look at the surface, we have wonderful fast bowlers but on this occasion, the three spinners worked well for us. (On personal achievement of 10k Test runs) Never thought I would score this many runs. It was a dream to play a Test for Australia and now scoring so many runs and playing 100 Tests, it is a dream come true

Dhananjaya de Silva (captain, Sri Lanka): The toss is very important, as you can see it is not quite easy to chase 600 plus at Galle. The ball was turning, Jeffery batted well but the guys needed to score runs and put on a show. Losing always hurts but we had our chances. We had four catches dropped. We need to put our bodies on the line, they proved that they are the best side as the champions of the WTC.

Usman Khawaja (Player of the Match, 232 runs off 352 balls in the 1st innings): I'm really grateful that I get to play cricket for Australia and get the chance to do well! Galle is a tough place to come and win. We are a good team, we just finished a tough Test series back home, so to come here and win the first Test is special. This is my fifth trip to Sri Lanka, I've made a lot of mistakes here and so, am trying my best to correct them on this tour!

What a win for Australia, they have been right on top here throughout the contest. The last pair were a tough nut to deal with but Australia managed to get the better of them at last. This win marks Australia's first in Tests in Asia having the opposition following on since 2002.

The match was set up well with Usman Khawaja and Travis Head scoring big at the top of the order. Khawaja continued batting, getting to his maiden double century and was joined in the middle by Steve Smith, who got his 10000th Test run and topped it off with a century. Later, it was time for more celebration as Josh Inglis, on debut, also scored a hundred. All their contributions helped Australia to post in excess of 600 and pose a challenge to Sri Lanka.

For Sri Lanka though, it was a sob story in the first innings. Their openers failed and with all the experience they had, they had only one guy stand up to the task. Dinesh Chandimal braved the challenge at hand and put on a show with a good half-century. Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis got starts as well but weren't able to convert it to a big score, which saw them being bundled out for cheap.

Come the second innings, things seemed to improve with Chandimal and Mathews putting on a partnership. But that was soon cut short with Chandimal being dismissed before the lunch break. Post that, Australia ran through the Lankan batting attack. With nine wickets down, the visitors thought that the match was done but that wasn't the case as Vandersay delayed the inevitable with a half-century. He too perished, looking to go for a big hit and being caught as Australia completed a comprehensive win.
