Commentary

If today’s matches are anything to go by, we are going to experience spectacular contests as the tournament progresses. We will bring all the action to you.

As of now, allow us to take our leaves, this is Dwaipayan Mukherjee, signing off with my co-commentator Rajarshi Das.

That takes the Durban Super Giants to the top spot in the points table. Still very early days in the tournament but all teams will play their best games to ensure that they don’t fall into the rut of defeats.

The action comes thick and fast at the SA20. Paarl Royals won their game against Pretoria Capitals when they hosted them. The opportunity now arises for the Capitals to get going in their reverse fixture when they meet in Centurion tomorrow.

Jon-Jon Smuts, Player of the Match: Thought it to be a pretty good wicket - not as good as that if I am honest. Bit of luck. I know this wicket well. Have spent a lot of time here. It's a wicket that can be quite difficult for the newcomer. When batters get going, it's difficult to defend. Markram's a big wicket - obviously delighted to see the back of him. We've got a very strong squad assembled. Let's hope we can keep the momentum.

Keshav Maharaj, Durban Super Giants captain: Clinical performance today. Good to see the energy on the field. Heartening to see everyone putting their hand up when the opportunity presents itself. He got off the flight the other day and still executed (Gleeson). Now 2 games in 3 days, he showed the world class performer he is. This is always a special place when it comes to the atmosphere. Nice way to start the tournament.

Aiden Markram, Sunrisers Eastern Cape captain: Nice to be a part of the game, it was a good game. The general cricket lover would have enjoyed it. Unfortunately didn't go as per our liking. First game together as a team, the execution could have been better with the ball. (On Abell's catching attempt from earlier) Quite frightening what guys can do these days, they train for it as well. There's no panic now, time to learn and return stronger.

That makes it 2 wins out of 2 matches for the Durban Super Giants who would mighty pleased with how they have began the campaign. It would give them a lot of happiness with the way they turned up today.

It was a clinical effort with both bat and ball as a Smutts and Pooran master class took them to an exuberant and towering 225. It was always going to require the top drawer quality from Aiden Markram and his men. Matters were made difficult for them when the openers departed cheaply.

Markram and Abell stitched together an inspired 93 run stand in less than 9 overs that suddenly made the supporters in the ground believe that the improbable could actually happen.

That is when Smuts was thrusted with the bowling duties and he did not disappoint his skipper. Once Markram left, it was a bit too much left to do and even though Stubbs came up with a saving grace effort, the hosts succumbed to a 35 run defeat.

7 bowlers were used by Keshav Maharaj, including himself, where he took the all important wicket of Tom Abell. As Aiden Markram puts it in the post match presentation, it was definitely a great match for the genuine wicket taker.
