It turned out to be a pretty comfortable victory for Svanholm in the end as they managed to restrict the American University of Malta to 85/6 in their allotted 10 overs, handing themselves a 53-run win. Despite a good start from the openers, it turned out to be a huge target in the end as Malta kept losing wickets and weren’t quite able to find the boundaries at the rate they needed.
Basil George and Darshit Patankar got them off to a good start as they managed to find 14 from the first over and 18 from the 3rd over which set them off for the run chase. Some scintillating shots came from the blade of George but the required rate kept climbing at an alarming rate. Malta also kept losing wickets on a consistent basis which didn’t really allow them to be in with a chance.
It was some tight bowling from Abdullah Mahmood, Asad Shah, and Said Alam as they kept the run rate in check and also chipped away with vita wickets. Eventually, Malta fell well short of the victory target. Basil George was the top scorer with 22 while Asad Shah was the pick of the bowlers for Svanholm, finishing with figures of 2/15.
Earlier in the day it was a blitzkrieg from Musa Mahmood as Svanholm managed to post a more than competitive 138 in their allotted 10 overs. It was Svanholm who won the toss and decided to bat. Musa looked in disdainful touch right from the word go and didn’t spare any of the bowlers.
His opening partner Hamid Shah didn’t quite find his range and had to be content with giving singles to his partner. It was a scintillating display of power hitting and all the shots oozed class and confidence.
It was just not about slogging all the way, he played some delightful shots and any top cricketer would have been proud of the innings he played. He smashed 8 fours and 5 sixes during his knock of 80 which came in just 30 deliveries before he was run out in the final over in an attempt to forge the strike.
Abdullah Mahmood then came late in the order and smashed Jaspal Singh for three sixes and a four to remain unbeaten on 22 off a mere 5 deliveries.
