Commentary

So that concludes our coverage of this three-match ODI series but the T20Is aren't far away with the first of five games commencing on Wednesday, December 12 (early morning on Thursday if you're in the Indian subcontinent). Shai Hope collects the series trophy and goes on to pose with his teammates. Fireworks light up as the West Indies take the series 2-1. This is a year that hasn't been kind to them although they have only themselves to blame for it. But to cap off their final ODI assignment with success, that too with a side that is largely inexperienced, will please them to bits. Plenty of positives and so much potential to tap into and they'd hope that it's the start of a special run for some of these players.

As for England, a change in format is what they'd desperately want. They've had a torrid few weeks in 50-over cricket that began with their World Cup defense going awry. And while their youngsters have fared well this series, the fact that this period of transition is going to be a tricky one was reiterated further today. They will welcome some of their more experienced players back for the T20s with an eye on the World Cup on these shores next year. Will that bring about a change in fortune though? Time will tell...

West Indies skipper Shai Hope has been declared the Player of the Series for topping the charts with 192 runs. Here's what he has to say: We got the win, that's what I wanted from the outset. As long as my runs are contributing to wins I'm happy. I don't think anything seriously (when I go out to bat), just look to stick to the basics and play according to the situation. I think I set a decent example in the team. It's one of those things I look to do. But it's good to see the other guys doing it with the bat as well. Any time we win especially on home soil - we need to defend our home turf - it's great to see the guys do well. Hopefully we've given some smiles to the West Indian fans. (On Matthew Forde's debut) I remember making my debut on this ground in 2015. It's a special feeling. He has a bright future ahead of him. (Looking ahead to the T20s) Every time you play for the West Indies it's a great opportunity to perform and do well. Another series, another challenge - looking forward to it.

Jos Buttler - I think we were a few short with the bat.. We fought really hard with the ball but not good enough with the bat. (On rain interruptions) It's challenging but the guys have played a lot of cricket and should deal with it. We know that we made a few mistakes with the bat. It's been wet and I thought the bowlers were fantastic. Will Jacks bowled really well and that brought us into the game. It's a start of the long journey for some guys. They got their first taste In ODI cricket and hopefully can learn a lot from this series going on and build something for the furture. Looking forward to playing some T20 series. Debutant Matthew Forde is the Player of the Match for his outstanding spell of bowling. Here's what he has to say: Lot of work going in behind the scenes. The guys have played very hard. For me coming into this series and making my debut it's obviously a dream come true. It was always special for me. I'm 21 and living my dream. I thank all the guys for making it possible. Coming in front of my home crowd - my mum and dad are here - it's heartwarming. The wicket was a bit tacky. There was a bit of seam movement so it was just about getting it right in that consistent area. It was about a good line and length and thankfully I got it right. Batting with Sheppy (Shepherd), these guys are the ultimate strength that you can get. I played that support role and thankfully we could get the series win.

It was a year where they failed to make it to the ODI World Cup for the first time in their storied history. It was something that hurt them and surely still is. But the West Indies have turned up a determined lot to put things on track. And in the absence of some of their regulars like Jason Holder, Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran, they have scripted a series win to savor even if it was after a bit of a huff and a puff.

Their bowlers were on top once again with Matthew Forde showing the way on debut in a stop-start game that was marred by rain. Thereafter, a 34-over essay left the hosts with 188 to chase and the early loss of Brandon King, coupled with some outstanding bowling by Sam Curran who got the ball to move around and kick off the surface meant that it wasn't going to be an easy task. Two young men showed the way though to lay the foundation as Alick Athanaze and Keacy Carty played out the tough deliveries while also looking to stay positive against the scoring opportunities. They got on top of the bounce quite often to pull out some exquisite strokes off the book as their partnership put the hosts on course.

So much so that the West Indies were ahead of the eight-ball for a good part of the chase. England were not going to give up though and after Gus Atkinson trapped Athanaze plumb in front, Rehan Ahmed sent skipper Shai Hope packing to break the game open. Thereafter, skipper Jos Buttler turned to a spin-choke and used the duo of Liam Livingstone and Will Jacks in tandem, with the latter spinning a web around the West Indies.

Wickets fell regularly - a couple of them down to pretty ordinary shots as well - as the West Indies seemed to lose their footing. Carty notched up a pristine half-century but when he too threw it away, one feared a sense of deja vu from the hosts' point of view with Jacks showing outstanding control and putting England in pole position.

However, all it required was one big over to tilt the scales in favor of the hosts. They got that off the 31st when Atkinson speared the ball all over the place and dished out a couple of full tosses which Romario Shepherd duly pounced upon. Shepherd had his moments of fortune too with a couple of mishits somehow clearing the ropes instead of landing in the hands of the fielder but he continued to enhance his reputation as a reliable finisher in the company of Forde, who also played his part as the West Indies eventually got the job done to script a famous series win. What a moment for a young team led by an inspiring skipper in Shai Hope and this could just spur them onto more special feats in time to come!

A first ODI series win at home against England in 25 years for the West Indies! Hugs and smiles in that dugout and they will be extremely elated with this achievement as they round off their final ODI assignment in the year in style. Alas for England, a forgettable 2023 in the format sees them hit another roadblock. West Indies win by 4 wickets (DLS) with 14 deliveries to spare!

Buttler looks dejected but West Indies are the better team and they seal the series 2-1. Quicker and fuller, Shepherd sweeps and gets an inside edge.
