Commentary

Shai Hope [West Indies' captain]: [On the first innings score]I must say it's a commendable effort after the start we had, we had to stabilise in the middle overs. Happy with the result. [On talks with Pooran] It was about absorbing all the pressure we can take it deep and it was in the last couple of overs that we thought to capitalize. Anytime he gets runs we do well. It's always good to see him get runs that we know he's capable of getting. The first time we have played against them, it was about playing good cricket on the day. We thought Alzari was the better option with the new ball. Bowling short was part of the plan. I still think we should have strung more good-length deliveries together. [On fielding] We just need to keep working on the mindset on the field. We really let ourselves down there, it's important we know that. We all know what's at stake. I am happy with the direction we are taking but we need to make sure we keep getting better.

Rohit Paudel [Nepal's captain]: I think early stages the bowlers bowled well, dropped few catches in the field, we missed few opportunities and could've done better. Pooran and Hope batted really well, credit to them. We are a good fielding unit, on occasions we missed opportunities, having said that, we're still a good fielding side and we will prove that in the next game. They bowled good short deliveries, we could've done better to use the pace but Aarif Sheikh and Gulshan played really well in the middle overs, will come up with plan to tackle the short balls. Playing against test playing nations has taught me a lot, we need to up on our toes, we cannot take any game lightly, we want to focus on that. We're looking forward to the Netherlands game, if we win we have a good chance of making it to the super six.

Shai Hope is the Player of the Match! Here's what he has to say: [About his hundred] I still believe that the rhythm was a bit off, that situation I'm just happy that I batted through, happy to help team get over the line. Key was to absorb as much pressure as possible, then find a way to transfer the pressure back on the opposition, Pooran actually made my life easier and wanted to take as much deep as possible, give ourselves best chance. I don't think I hit my targets today, I'm happy to bat as deep as possible, team really needed me. Nepal bowled really well, the spinners especially stuck to their tasks, we batted well enough to overcome their spin threat, there's obviously room for improvements.

Cricket is the winner here! West Indies get a massive win, and Nepal get a lot of lessons out of it after an attritional performance. 340 was always going to be too big for them and they understandably came out with a strategy to bat all 50 overs and limit the damage to their NRR before going into the next match against the Netherlands.

West Indies started well with Holder and Joseph getting some movement off the pitch and getting rid of Bhurtel and Sharki. But Nepal were still in the game at the end of the powerplay, almost at the same rate as West Indies. However, Paul and Mayers slowed the innings down massively and built pressure with their short-pitched bowling that led to the wickets of Aasif and Paudel.

The first of those was courtesy of a brilliant catch from Mayers. Take that and Pooran's catch at the end out, and it was otherwise a really poor effort from West Indies on the field as they gave away too many runs on the boundary and missed a few chances close-in.

Another pattern was the short balls doing the trick for the Men in Mahroon, whenever they bowled that well, they got the wickets. Aarif Sheikh and Gulsan Jha became slightly comfortable against Hosein and Chase's spin and hunkered down with singles and doubles, defending everything that was even slightly away from their arc.

Paul broke the partnership only in the 44th over and after that, despite Karan KC's aggression down the order, it was just a matter of time before West Indies cleaned up the tail. 25-year-old Aarif Sheikh was the biggest positive for them, as he followed the plan to perfection and held one end.

Though Nepal couldn't take it to 50 overs, their battle here would give them immense confidence against the Netherlands.

Kudos also grows to the crowd and their chants that kept the West Indies players on the edge!

49.4 Kyle Mayers to Karan KC, OUT! IT'S ALL OVER FINALLY! Chips the length delivery straight back to Mayers who clings on and West Indies finally manage to bowl out Nepal. Nepal would be pleased that they almost went on to bat full 50 overs and plenty of take aways for them. West Indies have a lot of work to do as far as their fielding is concerned!

49.3 Kyle Mayers to Karan KC, SIX! BANG! Karan KC, you beauty, what a shot that. Full on the off-stump, Karan hangs back and POUNDED it way over long-off for a huge maximum.
