UP Yoddhas 33 - 35 U Mumba

You have to feel for the UP Yoddhas there!
They had U Mumba on the ropes for most of this match, but Sunil Kumar's side refused to give up and looked really comfortable playing with 2-3 defenders on the mat, and they'll reflect positively on the three Super Tackles that proved to be the difference in the end.

The Yoddhas dominated the initial portions of the match to get the all-out, with U Mumba hitting back strongly to go in almost level at half-time. In the second half as well, U Mumba delayed an inevitable all-out for the longest possible time, but once the Yoddhas got it, they looked favorites to clinch the win.

However, with 90 seconds left to play and trailing by three, some brilliant raiding from Rohit Raghav and some clutch defending helped U Mumba execute a heist of a win!

Ajit Chauhan was the pick of the raiders, with Bharat also having an impressive game, scoring a Super 10. Rohit Raghav's impact off the bench can't be understated either. However, it was the defenders who were on top for both teams, with Sumit, Hitesh, Rinku, Sunil Kumar, and Parvesh all crossing three tackle points for the night!

In the end, it was a few moments of brilliance in a short space of time that sealed the win for U Mumba, while the Yoddhas will have to regroup and go again in front of their home fans.

That's some match we've witnessed to start the Noida leg of PKL 2024, and the action doesn't stop here! Two of the best coaches in the PKL go head-to-head as the Steelers and the Gujarat Giants face off in the second match of the night.

2nd Half, 40'
UP Yoddhas 33 - 35 U Mumba

U Mumba concede the bonus to Bharat, but at the other end, Rohit Raghav gets another point, neatly escaping from Ashu Singh's challenge. Bharat is the last man standing and Rinku puts in a crucial, crucial tackle that gets them the all-out! They also lead by one now!

With 30 seconds left on the clock, Rohit Raghav kills time, but it isn't enough to stop a final raiding opportunity from Shivam Chaudhary.

But the left raider can't rescue the Yoddhas and it's their cover combination that gives U Mumba the win with a technically perfect chain tackle to win a nail-biter for U Mumba!

How did they pull this off?! Heartbreak for the Yoddhas as they simply can't end up on the right side of these thrillers, but credit to the character and resolve shown by U Mumba.
2nd Half, 39'
UP Yoddhas 31 - 30 U Mumba

They could! They really could! What a raid that is from Rohit Raghav!

Shambolic defending from the Yoddhas, but credit to Rohit Raghav who pulls out a brilliant dubki on the left chain, stunning the home crowd and reducing the deficit to one.

The Yoddhas have just two on the mat now.
With 90 seconds left on the clock, U Mumba call a timeout. Can they turn this around or salvage a tie?
2nd Half, 38'
UP Yoddhas 31 - 28 U Mumba

What was that from U Mumba? It's a do-or-die raid for Bharat, who's allowed to score an easy bonus point by the U Mumba defense. With the difference just 2-3 points, you can't afford to concede any free points.

A timeout is called, and the U Mumba head coach Gholamreza simply asks his strike raider Ajit Chauhan to operate with a calm head.

Ohh well, Ajit Chauhan has it tough against a 4-man U Mumba defense, and Hitesh simply doesn't err with his mighty block to stop him right in his tracks.

With around two minutes left on the clock, it is advantage Yoddhas right now, but Rohit Raghav gets a quick touch point on the left corner to bring the deficit back down to three.
2nd Half, 36'
UP Yoddhas 29 - 27 U Mumba

Clutch tackle from Ashu Singh to stop the marauding Ajit Chauhan. He got a kick flush on his face from Ajit, but he absorbed the blow really well, converting it into an ankle hold.

Dhanasekar does really well, using his speed to great effect to get the running hand touch on the left corner, and what that does is revive Ajit Chauhan.
2nd Half, 34'
UP Yoddhas 28 - 26 U Mumba

Shivam Chaudhary follows it up with a running hand touch on the U Mumba captain Sunil Kumar, but Ajit Chauhan revives him immediately, escaping from an advanced tackle attempt from Hitesh.

Wait, that's a clear second touch on the left cover Vivek that's not given, and Ajit Chauhan is given a green card for relentlessly arguing for the point. And while you can see why he's so desperate given how clear the touch was, that's not the way you appeal! The two points are given to Ajit eventually.

Bharat gets a useful bonus point, but at the other end, Ajit is flying! He gets away with ease from Sumit's attempted challenge as U Mumba stay within touching distance of the Yoddhas.
2nd Half, 32'
UP Yoddhas 26 - 23 U Mumba

Dhanasekar, the substitute left raider, gets another crucial raid point for U Mumba, or wait does he? The referees rule in favor of the Yoddhas, claiming that he steps into the lobby first.

U Mumba review the decision, and that looks clear-cut, it's unsuccessful.

Finally, the Yoddhas don't concede a Super Tackle, the substitute Keshav Kumar drawing and escaping from Parvesh's attempted challenge. And the Yoddhas don't waste any time in inflicting the all-out, Sumit making no mistake with his tackle on his opposite number.
2nd Half, 30'
UP Yoddhas 21 - 23 U Mumba

Okay, U Mumba might want to play with only 2-3 defenders on the mat because they keep getting the Super Tackle with such ease!

To be fair to Shivam Chaudhary, Parvesh and Sunil is the last combination you want to go up against in a 2-man defense, and this time, it's Parvesh who initiates the tackle, and Sunil provides the support as U Mumba simply refuse to concede an all-out, claiming their third Super Tackle in the process.

Both teams slow the game down after that moment as the second timeout of the match comes about.

This game still balanced on a knife's edge as the Yoddhas search for that decisive raiding effort that can help them complete the all-out.
2nd Half, 28'
UP Yoddhas 21 - 21 U Mumba

That's an absolute freebie from Vivek, who puts in an indecisive challenge on Ajit Chauhan, who takes the gift with both hands.

With U Mumba down to four, the Yoddhas have it all to do in the raiding department, and a couple of empty raids ensue as a result.

In the do-or-die raid that follows, Bharat steps up big-time to rescue the Yoddhas, extending his left arm brilliantly to get the running hand touch on Ajit Chauhan.

Zafardanesh has a do-or-die raid immediately after, and he runs right into Hitesh, who has been rock-solid tonight.

The Yoddhas draw level and U Mumba are down to two again!
2nd Half, 25'
UP Yoddhas 19 - 20 U Mumba

Ohh, hefty running hand touch from the substitute Dhanasekar on the left-in to extend U Mumba's lead to two points.

But Bharat Hooda might well have brought the Yoddhas level immediately. The left raider is blindsided by Rinku's dash but remains strong enough to make his way to the mid-line. No, the referees award just the one point to the Yoddhas!

Ohh, the Yoddhas review the decision, claiming that one member of the defense steps out of bounds. However, if he steps out of bounds after the touch happens and he doesn't take part in the tackle, the decision should be in favor of U Mumba, and that's what it looks like.

The review is unsuccessful and it's a one-point raid.
2nd Half, 23'
UP Yoddhas 18 - 19 U Mumba

Ohh, huge tackle that from Sumit to reduce U Mumba to two! Rohit Raghav went in for the bonus point and got it, but Sumit's ankle hold was timed really well, and the rest of the defense quickly came in to support.

Just as the Yoddhas think they'll get another all-out, Sunil Kumar comes up with another brilliant Super Tackle! That's outstanding from the captain. This time it's the tall and powerful Gagan Gowda who comes in, but just when he think he slips away from Sunil, he pounces with a diving knee hold, receiving good support from the substitute Lokesh.

And with that, U Mumba take the lead for the first time tonight!
U Mumba to raid first in this 2nd half.
Half-Time
UP Yoddhas 17 - 16 U Mumba

U Mumba bail themselves out of trouble, and it's the captain who steps up. Rohit goes in and gets a handy bonus point, and with just two on the mat, Bharat goes in for the kill only to find himself on the receiving end of a terrific Super Tackle initiated by Sunil Kumar.

The U Mumba skipper did not err with his double knee hold, and received great support from Rohit, and they kept the powerhouse Bharat down to escape an all-out, also reducing the deficit to just one point!

The whistle blows for half-time to cap off a thrilling first half that was a real roller-coaster ride. UP Yoddhas dominated the first portions of the match, leaving U Mumba no space to breathe, getting the all-out in a flash. However, Sunil Kumar and Co. adjusted quickly and settled in to play their game, hitting back with an all-out of their own.

While the Yoddhas did push for another all-out and got real close to doing so, a handy Super Tackle denied them that opportunity.

This game is poised really nicely right now. Who'll emerge winners from here?
1st Half, 19'
UP Yoddhas 17 - 13 U Mumba

Ohh, that's really good from Shivam Chaudhary. He forces the U Mumba defense into losing their bearings in a 1v4 situation in a do-or-die raid, with Rinky going out of position. That leaves Zafardanesh isolated and vulnerable, and the left raider hurries the Iranian into making an error, claiming a well-taken point.

Rohit Raghav is subbed on and does well to get a bonus in a do-or-die raid. However, Bharat has it easy against a 3-man U Mumba defense, ambling across to the left corner to claim an easy touch on Sombir.

U Mumba staring at an all-out now.
1st Half, 17'
UP Yoddhas 15 - 12 U Mumba

Bharat chips in with a very useful tackle point, initiating the challenge on a surprised Ajit Chauhan, with the rest of the defense racing across to support him.
1st Half, 15'
UP Yoddhas 14 - 12 U Mumba

2nd tackle point of the night for Hitesh, who gets Manjeet yet again. It's a carbon copy of his first tackle as Manjeet attempts to leap over the chain, but nothing doing says the in-form right corner.

Shivam Chaudhary's uses his reach really well to get a touch on Parvesh Bhainswal.
1st Half, 13'
UP Yoddhas 12 - 11 U Mumba

It's a do-or-die raid for Zafardanesh against a 4-man defense and his pace causes panic in the Yoddhas' defense, drawing a hurried challenge from Ashu Singh, which he easily rides to the mid-line. He showed great awareness there to wait for Sumit to try and provide support, also getting a touch on him, reducing the Yoddhas to two.

Bharat can only manage a bonus in the next raid, and Ajit Chauhan is too skillful for the two-man Yoddhas' defense, reducing them to one.

Bharat is the last man standing, and the U Mumba defense stay disciplined, grant him the bonus, before Rinku and his partner in the chain put in a strong block to register an all-out.

Solid comeback from U Mumba this!
1st Half, 10'
UP Yoddhas 10 - 5 U Mumba

Ajit Chauhan shows that he's a raider in top form, exuding confidence in getting the hand touch on the right corner in a 1v4 situation. Bharat eases any concerns his team may have of a potential all-out with a quick running hand touch on the left-in.

A couple of empty raids follow as we get to the first timeout of this match. The Yoddhas have started brilliantly, but U Mumba seems to have regained their bearings and they'll look to hit back in the second ten minutes of this half.
1st Half, 8'
UP Yoddhas 9 - 4 U Mumba

Well, U Mumba hitting back strongly with a neat passage of play here. Ajit Chauhan gets his first point of the match after their first tackle point, using the lobby really well to get away from an attempted dash from the left cover.

Rinku then puts in an audacious tackle, blindsiding Shivam, who made the cardinal sin of showing his back to the defense and simply being too slow on the turn.
1st Half, 6'
UP Yoddhas 9 - 2 U Mumba

U Mumba score their first point, a bonus taken by substitute Rohit Raghav as the Yoddhas inflict the first all-out in very quick time!

Manjeet was tackled by a very proactive Hitesh on the right corner before Bharat picked on Parvesh to reduce U Mumba to one. From there, it was an easy all-out for the Yoddhas, who're well on top in these opening few minutes.

Finally a proper point for U Mumba as Zafardanesh makes no mistake with his ankle hold on Gagan Gowda from the left-in position.
1st Half, 4'
UP Yoddhas 4 - 0 U Mumba

Ohh, poor defending from the U Mumba defense results in a catastrophic result!

It's a do-or-die raid for Shivam Chaudhary, and Zafardanesh goes in with an instinctive diving ankle hold, and the support comes in way too late, giving away two points to the Yoddhas. Credit to Shivam for his presence of mind in delaying his surge past the mid-line.

U Mumba down to two now.
1st Half, 2'
UP Yoddhas 2 - 0 U Mumba

Bharat starts with an empty raid, and so does U Mumba. And it's Gagan Gowda who gets the first point of the match, making the most of an error from Sunil Kumar, easily escaping to the mid-line.

Sumit the captain strikes for the Yoddhas as they make a solid start to this match. Ajit Chauhan was always set to be the big raiding threat for U Mumba, and it's a hefty block that comes in from Sumit to stop him right in his tracks.
Toss Update: U Mumba win the toss and choose court. The Yoddhas will raid first.

Bharat Hooda will start us off.
Right then, both teams are out onto the mat, and it's U Mumba who enter first, followed by the home team UP Yoddhas.
