22:02 (IST)10 JAN 2023

So India starts their mission to the 2023 World Cup with a comprehensive win against Sri Lanka. The top five batters can be persisted for a long run. There might be many options to explore in the bowling unit, particularly the pace department. But for now we will leave you here with all the updates from the match are over. Till then take care and hope to see you'll back for the second ODI on January 12, Thursday.

21:54 (IST)10 JAN 2023

Virat Kohli (POTM) (2/2): Not who we were when we picked up the bat or the ball and why we started playing. When that perspective goes off, you start putting yourself in a space where everything just keeps spirling downwards. It's only that detachment in the real sense that you go out there and play without any fear and for the right reasons. Almost play every game like it's your last and being happy about it. These are the things I learned. I can't hold onto things. The game is going to move on and keep going on. Many players have played in the past as well. I'm not going to play forever, so what am I trying to hold onto? What am I trying to protect? All these things, I realized and I'm in a happy space. I just want to enjoy as long as I play this game.

21:52 (IST)10 JAN 2023

Virat Kohli (POTM) (1/2): I don't think there was anything different. My preparation and intent always stay the same. Sometimes, you don't quite get the flow that you want but today, I just felt like I was hitting the ball nicely from the get-go, so I just kept backing my intent. Even when the wickets fell, I had to hold one end and bat along with the other guys. As I said in the mid-innings break, it was very close to the template that I play with and understanding the conditions in the second half. I also had in mind that we would need those 25-30 extra runs and eventually, I was just happy to get that for the team to give us a comfortable total on the board. (Learning from his lean patch) The one thing that I learned was that desperation doesn't get you anywhere. The game still remains very simply. It's when we start complicating things with our own attachments, our own desires, our own attachment to who we've become from people's point of view.

21:51 (IST)10 JAN 2023

Rohit Sharma (2/2): You've got to be in the game to take those half chances and catches. Having said that, you won't always have a perfect game. There will be some areas where you need to look at as a group. It's a team sport. It's not about one or two individuals and all eleven members need to come together on the park collectively to put the effort. (Shami run out at non-striker's end) I had no idea Shami did that. He went for the appeal. He (Shanaka) was batting on 98 and the way he was batting was brilliant. So, you've got to give it to him. We didn't want to get him out like that. We wanted to get him out the way we thought we'll get him out. Hats off to him. He batted really well.

21:50 (IST)10 JAN 2023

Rohit Sharma (1/2): Very impressed with the win. We started off really well with the bat and to get that kind of runs, it was a great effort from all the batters. The platform was set to come out and play freely for a lot of the batters and we played some really good cricket with the bat. But of course, we could have bowled slightly better. I don't want to be too critical about it. It wasn't the easiest bowling conditions, although the dew was not so much. It's still not easy to bowl under the lights once it settles in. We bowled pretty well as a unit because if you want to win games like this, everyone needs to come to the party and I thought we bowled pretty well upfront to get wickets with the new ball which helped us get some momentum.

21:50 (IST)10 JAN 2023

Umran Malik: I've played just six games, my intention is to do well for the country and play well, bowl well in the right areas. There wasn't much bounce on offer on that track, spoke to Rohit, Shami and they told me to bowl in the right areas and it worked out well for me. India won by 67 runs.

21:49 (IST)10 JAN 2023

Dasun Shanaka: The start the Indian batters got was brilliant, our bowlers didn't live up to the expectations, didn't use the new ball to good effect but Indian bowlers stuck to their plans, bowled wicket to wicket and used the swing to their advantage. The bowlers didn't execute the plans, we just need to stick to it and do the basic things, first 12-15 overs is crucial. I'm doing the basics really well here, I back myself and it's working for me. In the ODI's, I may not need to go up the order but in T20's definitely I need to promote myself when the team needs me.

Match Summary

Indian openers Rohit Sharma (83) and Shubman Gill (72) posted 143 runs for the opening stand before Virat Kohli (113) recorded his 45th ODI century to put India with a commendable score of 373 for 7. Mohammed Siraj gave inflicted some early dismissals in Sri Lanka's chase, however, Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva built a 72-run partnership. Both of them couldn't continue beyond a point and lost their wickets. Wanindu Hasaranga and Chamika Karunaratne went after playing very short cameos. But Dasun Shanaka was never in the mood to perish and continued to play a blistering knock even when the results were out of his side's favour. Shanaka ended up scoring his maiden ODI hundred in a 67-run loss for the Islanders.

21:29 (IST)10 JAN 2023

India won by 67 runs not before Shanaka onslaught

Shami had almost run out Shanaka at the non-striker's end. The third umpire was ready to send the appeal upstairs but Rohit's intervention meant India would allow the Sri Lankan skipper to stay on the pitch for the last three balls else he could have been dismissed on 98.

The fourth ball of the over went for five runs. There was another attempt for run out at Shanaka's end (striker) but he had made it to the crease but India conceded five runs, four via overthrow. Shanaka was back at the crease and a four helped him score his maiden ODI century. The Sri Lankan skipper smashed Shami for a six to finish the game, but for India. The hosts won by 67 runs after a long wait.

21:02 (IST)10 JAN 2023

20:59 (IST)10 JAN 2023

Fifty for Shanaka

The Sri Lankan captain reached his fifty in a run-a-ball fashion. He plundered a couple of runs against Axar Patel to reach the landmark. Perhaps a century isn't far with more than seven over left to be bowled.

Virat Kohli after scoring century

Kohli: I could have got out for 50 odd. I'm just grateful and thankful that I was blessed with a little bit of luck today. It's important that we got 20-25 runs extra over 350. I think it was 330 odd that we were chasing (here in 2018) so we had to get those 40-45 runs extra. I remember Rohit batted through the innings that day. Someone will have to get a 150 and a 140 to chase this down. It's also good for the bowlers to practice in these conditions, what areas you want to bowl with the dew. It'll also give them confidence on how to bowl with the dew for a lesser score than today.

17:41 (IST)10 JAN 2023

Virat Kohli after scoring century

Kohli: Not bad, I've had a bit of a break. Couple of practice sessions before this. I was mentally fresh after the Bangladesh tour where things didn't go as well as I would have liked. I just wanted to go at my own pace and be positive from the outset. I had to bat through until the end. I would take those any day. Luck plays a big part. You just bow your head down and thank God on these kind of evenings. You tend to get frustrated when it doesn't go your way but it's important to remember these things as well

17:18 (IST)10 JAN 2023

India post 373 in 1st innings

Chamika Karunaratne conceded just six runs in the final over as India's brilliant innings finished at 373/7 in 50 overs. Mohammed Siraj on a couple of instances picked two runs in the last three deliveries to add his mere contribution to the side's humungous score.
