Kamaru Usman is currently the No.1 ranked welterweight fighter and former champion in the welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Kamaru Usman was born in Auchi, Edo, Nigeria on May 11, 1987. He moved to the United States of America in his childhood along with his brothers. In his high school years, Usman started wrestling, and he dreamt of making it to the Olympics in 2012 but was forced to change his plans due to injuries.
Kamaru Usman took professional mixed martial arts and made his debut in the sport on November 30, 2012, against David Glover at RFA 5 in Kearney, Nebraska, United States. Usman defeated Glover via TKO in the second round and started his professional career with a victory. In his second bout, he locked horns against Jose Caceres at CFA 11 on May 24, 2013, in Coral Gables, Florida, United States. Caceres defeated Usman by submission and handed him his first professional MMA loss. Recovering from his loss, Usman established a dominating and prolonged winning streak for years before losing a fight again.
On March 2, 2019, Kamaru Usman got his opportunity for the UFC welterweight title. He locked horns with the then UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 235, and won the bout via unanimous decision. Thereafter, Usman embarked on a dominating title reign which went on for years, and made five successful title defenses in his reign. In a major upset, Kamaru Usman lost to Leon Edwards at UFC 278, on August 20, 2022, via TKO in the closing moments of the final round of the showdown. His defeat ended his championship reign which started on March 2, 2019, and ended on August 20, 2022. Usman again met Edwards in a rematch at UFC 286 but failed to reclaim his lost title as Edwards was declared the winner via majority decision.
